I am not a copper collector, but the color on that piece looks pretty wonky- like it's been cleaned and retoned. I'd be curious to hear comments from copper specialists...

"Crust" like that isn't a positive thing since it often hides corrosion. The color of the coin is unnatural, though that may just be the photo. I wouldn't buy it.

Thanks for the replies. The color is likely a picture thing. For example the background that the coin is sitting on is actually black. The coin in hand is a little darker than shown.
I had a tough time trying to get a good picture of the coin and these turned out clearer than any of the others.

This coin will be part of a low end 1853 year set that my daughter and I are putting together and I believe it will meet the need just fine. image

For those wondering if this was another ebay "raw" purchase; no it was not. This coin along with the Trime and Half Dime of the same year were all purchased from
a dealer who regularly comes as a highly recommended source of raw coins on this forum.

I'd feel bad if my pictures caused them to be cast is poor light.

As far as the "crust" goes; its currently soaking in olive oil to see if some of it will come off. (another first for me to try)

    Thanks again,
    Richard

Looks original to me. I think there's too much crust in the letters and devices for this to have been cleaned anytime in the recent past.
