Which of the following services currently designate the '52 superbird quarter?

PCGS (Not sure they ever did- I've never seen one)

NGC (Did in the past, but no longer?)

ANACS ((Did in the past, but no longer?)

Dunno. Just got an email yesterday form someone selling one in an ANACS holder. The serial is over 1400000. Not sure how old that would make it.

The eagle has a little "S" on his breast.

It has been my experience that the "S" on the breast of the eagle is more like a lint mark that needs some imagination to help it along.

Does it have a CPG number? If so, then NGC will definitely attribute it.

NGC did attribute them, but I don't think they are included in the new NGC variety system.

If it has a CPG number, NGC will still attribute it under Variety Plus.

You know I never saw or heard of one until last week I believe Monday Teletrade had a really high end MS 65 - 66 NGC graded one.

NGC attributes them under Fivaz-Stanton number 1952-3.

i think TomB has the right thought on this one. it's an interesting "anomaly" but i can't see where it'sd worth any kind of premium, unless i'm the seller, of course!!!

Numismaniac - thanks for posting a pic. I can't find my close-up.

The lower part of the S does not show very well - even on cameo examples. It is much more than a struck thru piece of lint. Looks to me like a mint employee got creative and made an attempt to put a little S in the correct postion on the eagles chest. And to think that this happened over 50 years before the Wisconsin high/low extra leaves.

I believe PCGS now will slab a Superbird - at least that is what Customer Service told me when I asked if they will slab all FS numbers. I have four or five ready to send in.

NGC still recognizes the variety. I don't know about the old Anacs - I never saw one in an old Anacs holder. Presumably, they now will slab them since they have an FS number now.

That's the only one I've ever heard of.

I just looked at the Heritage site and see that at least two were recently designated by PCGS. Although NGC has desingated them in the past, according to there website, it is no longer on the list of varieties they recognize.

Mr. Spud beat me to it. Here is a pic from a QX3 microscope of a PCGS 65 cameo Superbird (not designated). I like his photo better.
