\'wife swap\' looking for numismatists

Greetings!

My name is Meghan McGinley and I am a Casting Producer for the ABC Television reality show, Wife Swap. In case you are not familiar with the show, the premise of Wife Swap is simple: for two weeks, two wives from two different families exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it's like to live a different woman's life. The show airs on ABC on Monday nights at 8pm - family hour! It offers a positive experience for people not only to teach, but to learn about different family values.

We are casting for the remaining episodes of third season of our show, and we are focusing on finding fun and outgoing families with interesting hobbies for upcoming episodes. I thought it would be cool to feature a family that is involved in the Hobby of Kings - coin collecting! I was hoping to find a family of Numismatists, where everyone - Mom, Dad and the kids - are all passionate about the hobby and participate together. We often feature sports families on our show, but rarely have an opportunity to focus on more academic ways to spend family time together. I thought that this might be a step in the right direction, and was hoping you would be willing to spread the word! We are casting for February and March of 2007, so casting is happening NOW!

Here is some information on the application requirements and the show itself:

. Families who appear on the show receive $20,000
. Families must have two parents (not necessarily married!)
. There must be at least one child between the ages of 6-17 living full time in the home
. Families must live in the continental USA
. Due to security restrictions, we are unable to feature military families at this time
. $1,000 finder's fee to anyone who refers a family who is cast on the show!

Any assistance you can give in letting people in your organization know about this casting call would be much appreciated! To receive further information, obtain an application or refer a family, please contact me at (212) 404 1473 or Meghan.McGinley@rdfusa.com.

Best,
Meghan

I think it puts this family in potential danger. Would you want your family and children subjected to all the crazy people out there once they think you may have money stashed in your closet. After announcing this to the whole country, I wouldn't feel safe.

Sure, I'm game. Have my wife burn two of her vacation weeks and ship her to godknowswhere, let a total stranger into my house for two weeks, broadcast the location where my collection resides when not in the bank, and get my kids national television exposure, all for $20k. Sounds like a great deal. NOT!

At first, I thought this was about swapping wives for coins. Wonder how many others thought so too. And really wonder how many contemplated the right coins for such a swap.

Just imagine the horror scene of the swap wife passed out on the couch with emptied coin albums strewn on the coffee table from a beer and doritos run via coinstar. Too bad all those Barbers went straight to the reject chute.

    fastrudy, surely you are jesting??

I think you will have to up the ante much, much more to get any takers on this.

Might as well put a large neon sign in my front yard pointing to my house and saying 'coin collector living here!!'

Anyone out there like to live dangerously? But then again... perhaps you will find someone. After all, just a week or two ago a gal in California died from water intoxification (drinking too much water) while trying to win a prize.... so who knows?

Who are you Meghan or Rudy?

Also, I don't think you would get any takers in coins for this show for the above stated security reasons. Nobody who has a strong holding of numismatic related items wants the world to know who they and their family are and where they live. It would open up a good opportunity to have a child or spouse kidnapped and held hostage for money or coins. Doing this gig would essentially paint a big fat red target on every family member of a coin collector/dealer appearing on this show. Sorry, I just don't think it would be a wise decision for anyone with coins to appear on this show besides the disturbing fact that this show's main premise is to cause chaos in a family environment for mind-numbing entertainment. I personally think the show is liberal trash and is a lame attempt at breaking down the sanctity of marriage. Wife swapping. Take this crap to the BST board. image

Actually, I have seen it once while flipping through channels and have never seen it again. I know they aren't going all the way but it's still annoying. These baby-steps by the liberal media to make even the most nauseating things acceptable have been going on for years and it's really sad.

Hey fastrudy or Meghan, let's put you on a reality show called 'Get Lost!'. The premise is simple - you get a one way ticket to northern Siberia and are never heard from again.

It took me 5 seconds to think about the above - about the same time network execs spend using their brains about creating new programming.

For multiple reasons, I have absolutely no interest in obtaining "15 minutes of fame" (even if I am paid for it) by appearing on television at all; and have even less interest in appearing on a "reality" show.

Surprising to me is the fact that millions of people would jump at the chance of being on TV and on a reality show (well, on second thought, maybe it is not surprising given the baser side of human nature).

I wonder how many people behind the scenes in the TV, Radio, Movie and News industry would have any interest in appearing in front of the camera in a reality show?

You'll have to find a family that started with statehood quarter and have nothing else than a couple of Whitman albums and a map of the US with quarters in the slots. Otherwise, too much could go wrong...coin tampering, theft from outside viewers or neighbors...

Excellent summary RYK. That's how most of us see it here...but there are hordes of people lined up to get their 15 minutes of fame...and BTW, if you don't find the offer attractive, you're not the people they want on this show anyway. I have to say that I've never watched a single "reality" show except for perhaps a few minutes here or there while channel surfing.

A suggestion, consider trying to find a family whose collecting interest is Elvis Presley related items, Movie Memorabilia items, Star Wars related items or similar things. You would probably find those families more pliable and receptive to your blandishments.

Better yet, how about a family whose hobby is watching, taping, collecting and re watching episodes of the Jerry Springer show. I am sure that such a family would jump at the chance to be on your show. You could probably save the $20,000.00 payment as the family would probably appear for free [maybe they would even pay your company for the privilege of appearing and your company could create a new profit center]. Lots of conflict and entertainment and ratings would result from that episode. It would give a great boost to your company and would be a valuable addition to your CV (Curriculum Vitae).

Did anyone ever stop to think that this may be an elaborate phishing scam? Look at fastrudy's profile and his/her comment back to torinocobra and ebaytrader. I don't think I would use ANY of the contact information provided in the original post even if I were interested. They may be just looking for addresses of people who collect coins. Think about it.

Check that, I just did a whois.net serch on the domain name and it is directed back to santa monica california for rdfmedia so at least the email is legit.

    Two questions, Meghan/Rudy:

    1) Are mixed marriages allowed (modern collector married to classic collector, kid collects Liberian dollars)?

    2) Do I count as a 59 year old child? My wife thinks so.

Not in charge, but certainly right about what passes for the terms of service around here. SportsModerator or CarolJ will certainly be slamming this when they see it.

And if you are having difficulty understanding the reasons behind some of the posts, please read what Poorguy has to say... he makes sense. If you are offended by the replies, well it's not unexpected given the concerns raised.

I was tempted to tell you to go peddle your tripe somewhere else, but figured that was a little rude. Just because I think your show is garbage is no reason to insult you. Ooops, did I say that out loud?

Sadly, I think it's legit. I run a message board devoted to hard rock and heavy metal music, and I received the same type of email regarding them doing a show where members of one family were into heavy metal. The contact information was similar. Different person, but same area code and prefix, and same domain name for contact:

    Greetings!

My name is Rachelle Mendez and I'm a Casting Producer for ABC Television's hit reality show, Wife Swap. I'm conducting a National Casting Search to find Metal Fans to feature on the current season of our show. I'm contacting you in hopes of discussing the possibility of working together to find a family who we can consider casting.

Wife Swap is a family show on ABC primetime. The premise is simple: two moms from two very different families get the opportunity to swap lives (but not bedrooms - everyone has their own!) for a week to experience what it's like to live a different lifestyle - and to see what they can teach each other about their own lifestyle!

We want to feature a family of long time metal fans (Death, Black, Thrash, Speed-etc) in hopes of shattering any common misconceptions of what family life for Metal Heads might be like! We encourage all families, the bolder and more adventurous the better, with 2 parents at home and school aged children (6-17) to apply immediately. The family can belong to any aspect of the Metal community-as fans, promoter, band members-it really makes no difference, as long as the family is genuinely passionate about Metal.

Maybe you know of a family or have a family yourself with made for TV personalities that you'd be willing to recommend. I would greatly appreciate you forwarding my information on to any of your family members, friends, and associates who might be interested in sharing their lives with us for a week!

In addition, each family that tapes an episode of Wife Swap receives $20,000 as compensation for their time. Anyone who refers a family that appears on our program receives $1000 as a "thank you" from us.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this - I know it is an unusual request. If you have any questions, or to apply, please contact me by phone or by email:
