1822 quarter question?

I have a 1822 quarter that looks like there is a digit under the first 2 in the date.
First off, that seems odd as it would be the third year after that digit had been changed, so perhaps this is the case of a re-used obverse.
Problem with that is that (at least according to my version of the browning guide) there was only one obverse use for the 1822 release.
Unfortunately I don't have a picture that shows anything conclusive. I need to improve my photo skills. But when I look at the first "2" there is definitely something in the curled base as well as connecting the curled base to the rounded portion "back" of the two.
I'd be interested to see if anyone else has seen anything like this before?

I had otherwise made it out to be a BR-1, but there is something about it that just isn't BR-1ish.. It bothered me the first time I compared it in the Browning guide, now it has me more interested.
any additional information?
Here's one in my collection to compare
If all the stars and letters match, you might have a planchet defect or a later die state, though Browning says the obv die did not deteriorate
If a new die, that would be very interesting indeed!
