My bourse pick-ups from the 2007 FUN show (dirty Charlotte gold)

RYKRYK Posts: 35,801 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am rarely able to pick up original, accurately-graded XF southern half eagles on the bourse, but at the recent FUN show, I was able to score two! I finally got around to having these photographed by mgoodm3, who has done a fabulous job of capturing the look of these coins. The first is my favorite of the two:

Perhaps you notice that the earobe of Miss L on the 1851 looks like it is pierced. That is a die anomaly that is typical for the 1851-C $5:

I think they look nice, but seriously, what's the big interest in yellow/orange or yellow/green gold? Heh hehimage

    Very nice!

Seems like it would take somebody a long time to be educated enough to
make wise and accurate decisions buying old gold. I wouldn't know
an original, accurately graded coin if it bit me on the nose.

I like the detail on the 51-C. That center punch on the earlobe got me until I read you comments. That must be in the hub, right?

Just a passing interest, no doubt. image

Maybe. I am undecided. I figure that CharlotteDude needs some competition ATS. image

Thanks. mgoodm3 deserves props for the terrific photography.

Very nice, RYK. Very crusty, and very nice. Kudos to he who defers to the side of crustiness, vice bright, scrubbiness.

I'm guessin' the 56-C is a VF-35 or XF-40. I'd lean more to VF-35 due to the reverse wear.
    and the '51-C is a XF-45.

    Am I close?

I have the same coin and it has this same feature. Notice that it's in the exact center of the ring of stars? Probably made by a compass point used to lay out the stars in a circle.

Very good, 'dude. The 51-C is in a 45 holder and the 56-C in a 40 holder. Never mind the grades, I like the 56-C better.

What do you think of this one?:

Daddy really likes that one... better than my XF-45. I'd give that an AU-50 to AU-53.

    Still doing well?

Great coins RYK. Dirty gold is cool. I've been looking for one issue (not TOO dirty) for 7 years now. K

Hey, for those of us that aren't gold hounds, one thing I've noticed is that gold from certain locations has a distinct color/tint to it. Does Charlotte gold have any sort of distinct tint?

EDITED TO ADD: Very attractive examples!!! image

I like the coins but prefer a black background. It shows the coins to better advantage. image

Lakes, I think we can all connect the dots. image

Nailed it. It's in an old green-label 50 holder. I actually think the detail grade is a bit higher but there is a patch of hairlines between the 12th and 13th stars and the truncation, which probably net down the grade. I am a big fan of the the 1861 southern gold coins. There are four coins in this miniset--I have the hardest one left to acquire (61-D gold dollar).

My friend Carl Lester wrote an article about this a while back. Doug Winter also has an article on the coloration of US gold coins on his website.
