grade the 1927 S SLQ **New Pics Added**
keep in mind that 1927 S are graded very loosely since the strike on most were pretty weak. There is still some luster in the crevices

I have about 30-40 of these in G-VG so I've seen my fair share of them in all conditions.
<< <i>coin came out of a PCGS XF40 holder. The coin looks much better in hand and has a lot more detail than the pictures suggest. >>
wow, that surprises me.. compared to this one I found which is XF-45, there's no comparison.

perhaps it's the lighting.
edit: after looking at it some more I think I was fooled by the yellowish lighting and red background too.

That coin is really an AU coin that was just graded down because it is exceptionally mushy
Wear shows on breast and right leg above and below knee. Most of the gown lines are visible. Shield details are bold. Breast is well rounded but has small flat spot.
REVERSE: High points of eagle are slightly worn. Central part of edge on right wing is well worn. Traces of mint luster may still show.
It seems to fit the description of a VF20 more than an EF40...
It is important to keep in mind that most 1927 S were very weakly struck
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
<< <i>My initial reaction was VF30 so I will stand by that even if it were graded PCGS EF40 as you state. >>
As much as I like this low mintage date, (the year my Mom was born) I would hesitate to buy it as at 50 money even as an 80th birthday present for her.
