Looks like "art" coins to me. Some companies use a special process to "colorize" coins--this guy seems to be doing it in his garage. My guess is, considering the low value of the coins he's tinkering with, he's not doing it to deceive; rather he thinks he's creating art. Anyone know what I mean?

I don't really have any problem with this artwork -- some are kinda pretty!

-- but it sure seems like some disclosure is in order. At least the people who wreck State Quarters actually tell you that the coin has been layered in gold. The seller has to be aware of collector interest in naturally toned coins and he's likely taking advantage of buyers who don't realize that he bought those coins a few weeks earlier -- in normal, untoned condition -- on the same damn ebay ID.

I don't know if the seller is trying to be deceptive, or if he knows someone *might* think it's original toning. I think of it this way--it's pretty obvious it's not original toning, and I think anyone who would value a toned coin would know it wasn't original. Thus, those who think they're pretty are probably buying them because they're pretty, not because they believe they have some numismatic value. As for the seller's intentions, we never really know who is on the other end of the ID. When I was younger I got a metal plating machine and had lots of fun gold plating my pocket change and shooting them with shotguns, and god knows what else. It never would have occured to me to disclose that I had done such things to the coins since the results would have been obvious to me (and others) at the time. Maybe someone should explain to the seller? I'd think if he were trying to capitalize on some chump with deception he wouldn't be toning 1999 nickels, he'd be after the morgan dollars.

Using words like "monster" and "rainbow" to describe his toning, I think he knows exactly what he's doing, and that is trying to rip-off a few "less knowledgable" people.

If that's true, then he should move on from Kennedy halves at $2.00 a piece and try something more valuable! I think his coins are attractive, and I've always been torn and confused about "natural toning" versus baked potato toning. Not sure how I feel about it.

I agree.

Of course, snakes like this would be find somewhere else to slither if people didn't pay such stupid premiums for toned coins.
