"1872 dime is F-102 (Ahwash 2). It is the most common (R2) of the 14 obverse dies used to strike 1872 coinage. There are traces of repunching within the 2 digit and a minor set of misplaced digits to the right of the scroll end."

Quote from Dismeguy (sp?) Thats what it looks like to me .
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."

Looks like a well-worn example of the doubled die reverse with 180-degree rotation between the hubbings. I'm going to be torqued off if you cherried that on eBay, I've been looking for one of those since they were discovered.

Sean got to it first...that's immediately what I thought of when I saw the image.

FYI, the best places to pick up this variety are the horizontal lines inside the loops of the "O" and "D" (both actually parts of an inverted letter "E" ), and what looks like a strong clach mark under the "E" in "DIME" (actually part of the top of the wreath). On slightly higher grade examples you can also see traces of the leaves that cross above the "N" inverted above the bow, and traces of the leaf under the "I" appear inverted above the "E" of "ONE". The discovery coin was mint state and absolutely breath-taking.

that's the 180 and was cherried on EBay too ( but too many people saw it so the bidding got a bit high)

Congratulations on finding the 1872 DDR, Seateddime! A cool variety. I sold a dark VF a while back.

I use the leaf running diagonally through the lower right corner of the E of DIME, from SW to NE. That was the design element that helped me to first figure out that this was a 175 degree rotated doubled die.
