Take it to a jewler or coin dealer and ask them to weigh it......that catches most of the fakes.......

Nothing that shouts out fake on it diagnostic wise.

If real it should weigh roughly 27.22 grams.

I can't tell from the pictures, but the 74-S is fairly common chopmarked. With a little looking you should be able to find one slabbed by PCGS or ANACS with neat chops --then you don't have to worry.

I think it's real - the chinese fakes tend to use a standard reverse ... they all look the same. This coin is missing the period after FINE, which is a known variety for 1874-S. It's not the normal chinese reverse.

Trade dollars are often smuggled out of China covered with tar in the bottom of junks [flat bottom boats]. Thus, many times they are harshly cleaned in order to try and get all the tar off .... and often have specks of black tar still on the surfaces.

any suggestions?..........I have never dipped, acetoned, etc. a coin so I have no idea what to do. It seems like glue is on it.
