NGC grading points question

Hello all....
I seen an add in the local paper for NGC graded Peace dollars. $35 each. So, no harm no foul, I called. I asked what the grades were and he said all the label says is BU. Is this a standard NGC designation?

Thanks,
Ray

  • I've never seen it on Peace Dollars, but I have seen it on Silver and Gold Eagles. My impression was that maybe the submitter requested that the 69's and 70's be labeled as such and anything else just be labeled GEM BU.

I don't submit to NGC, but that seems plausible.

Maybe on the Peace $'s, there was a desire for, say, 63 or better, and the 60-62 coins got labeled BU.

Super cheap bulk slabbing. No graders needed.

didn't some hoard have a minumun grade? i think it was the binion hoard? if they didn't make 63 or whatever the set grade was, they would be classified as BU? i could be wrong

  • Appreciate the inputs. I'm not a Peace collector, but this may be worth further investigation.

  • Investigation ended. I called back. 1922/23/24/25... Commons. They would have to be 64 or better to make it worth it. Doubt they are.

  • They're probably all relatively dumpy lower grade common UNCs. The good ones don't get sold this way. Why would they?
  • The guy said he couldn't remember how he came to have them, just that he wanted to see what he could get for them. They were listed in the "Under $50" Swap meet paper. If I was interested in Peace Dollars, I might think about looking at them in hand, but I'm not. But.... I'll check again next week. If they are still listed, maybe I can talk him into letting them go for $18-20.
