The 1951-D is one of the better made nickels of the 1950s, with 200 examples certified at PCGS in Full Steps and another 250-plus non-FS examples grading MS66 or higher. So unless you think you have a full stepper or a 66, you're not even going to recoup the certification fees when it comes time to sell.

"Keep in mind that most of what passes as numismatic information is no more than tested opinion at best, and marketing blather at worst. However, I try to choose my words carefully, since I know that you guys are always watching." - Joe O'Connor
<< <i>You may want to post some more pics of the other coins in that group before forking over the money for a submission. I don't think the coin you pictured is any better than a MS64, the obverse is not very well struck and the jawline is very flat, with many marks from the original planchet still visible.

I was thinking the same thing...
First coin has been graded twice in the last 2 months and has received the grades MS64, most recently MS65. The steps are well represented, being the strike is weak, IMO it's a MS64.
This 1951-S is lustrous and very prooflike with a very EDS strike but PCGS graded it a MS64. There are a couple of scratches in the hair. They are not located in the focal areas of the profile or fields.
After these results, I don't know what to suggest. If you just want to protect your coins, you could certainly find a cheaper way in doing so. Like someone said, your coins should either FS or grade MS66.

BTW Type2, Intercept Shield plastic 2x2s are a good (and comparatively inexpensive) bet for keeping your nickels from toning further and getting banged up.
I doubt it - less than 9000 sets sold -
they were sold in green cardboard holders with 2 of each coin and mint
most likely they were taken from a roll by a dealer who made his own 2x2's
so they could type descriptions on them
cool coins, but you could buy lots more for the slabbing fees that you are considering
btw, he just died recently
poor guy
he wasnt that old
