Russ, eat your heart out...

In another thread about stupid Ebay questions Russ posted this:

I do get tired of the "how do you do your images" questions from other coin sellers, though.

Russ, NCNE

Tonight I got these two questions:

PLEASE please Please tell me sir what in the world did you use to take that incredible picture??? Lighting etc. That is a beautiful picture of that gold reverse. Really! I will thank you so much for telling me lens, camera, copier?? Such a great pic. Thank you, Alan

and this

I am sorry to write you right back but I looked at all your auctions and I am a collector and "hands down" you have the "BEST" photographs of coins I have EVER seen posted on eBay. Good job!

No kidding!

Surely this guy must have seen Russ' auctions? Maybe I'm going to have to start calling my photos "JerView"...

In all seriousness, my photos on ebay aren't that good. I currently have 15 auctions running or recently ended, each with 3 to 8 photos in them so if I took time to make each one perfect I'd be up in the middle of the night...er, wait, I already am up in the middle of the night...so I don't know when I'd do it.

The shots on ebay just stand out compared to most of the crappy ones on there and I use photobucket to host fairly large ones instead of going with the ebay standard.

Cheers,
Jerry

I've lost count of how many eMails I've received that said the same thing. It's standard kiss ass language to get you to help.

Seriously, I'd be glad to help any forum member. I'm always trying to help...now there are other forum members who are better at it than I am and I believe some who charge for their services. So I'm not trying to take any business away but anyone who wants to get coins to me I'd be glad to photograph them. I just don't guarantee it will be as good as some of your other options. PM if you want an address.

I think you can tell that my post was mostly tongue in cheek and I agree with Russ on his interpretation of the actual comments.

    Thanks,

Everything is relative, some are better and a lot are worse, especailly for those people who only use that one small Ebay picture in their auctions. But also, some pictures are intentionally made small.

Yes, some sellers use intentionally bad photos but generally I think they'd be better off to use good photos. Many buyers imagine a coin to be even worse than it is when all they have is a bad photo. Of course these sellers will occasionally catch the naive who imagine it is a good coin and the seller is just photographicly challenged....

But not everyone could afford the photographic equipments, and ever if they could, some just don't know how to do it or want to take the time to do it right.

It's mostly the time to do it right. Like anything you can get 90% of the results with 10% of the equipment. I have a $100 canon camera that I could get 95% of the results I get with my $1500 setup. Russ claims his setup uses a $100 camera and $2 worth of lighbulbs or something like that.

You think if I traded golf clubs with Tiger Woods I could beat him?
