Oh the irony... I should proudly display my numismatic tendencies

Something happened today that I found pretty ironic. I needed to travel to Atlanta to work, so this afternoon I catch a flight from La Guardia to Atlanta. Surprisingly, the flight was not too full, and some guy, probably in his 20's, was sitting at the window and I was on the aisle. With no embarassment, he whips out the most recent issue of Playboy magazine (yes, that's Playboy magazine), takes it out of its plastic wrapper, and proceeds to read it out in the open during the flight. Although I was quite startled, I expected nothing less from a New Yorker image (and it also made it difficult for me to concentrate on my Alexander Hamilton biography that I was reading).

Fast forward about 3 hours, and I am now in Atlanta. Because American didn't even bother to serve a stale cracker on the flight, I quickly found a Famous Dave's BBQ restaurant down the street from my hotel. At the restaurant, I whipped out the most recent issue of Coin World, and proceed to read it out in the open. With just my luck, I happen to get a very attractive, young waitress, who has a penchant for calling me "hon." Needless to say, I was quite embarassed to be reading Coin World like a nerd out in the open, and quickly shoved it back in my bag. image

I found the out-in-the-open Playboy reading and my embarassment to be reading Coin World in public to be quite ironic. Perhaps one day I will proudly display my numismatic tendencies. image

I took wipped out a greysheet at a restrant one time and was plotting what set I was going to try to conquer next. The waitress said, "You know, too much work will make you old quick. There comes a time when you just need to relax."

This reminds me of an old Mad Magazine cartoon, one frame titled "Then" and the second "Now".

In the first, a teenager with a lustful glance eyes a copy of Playboy carefully tucked into a copy of Mad Magazine. In the second, the magazines are reversed.

There is another story too - they did a writeup on the 1933 $20 in Playboy, and a well known numismatic figure was interviewed for the article. I talked to this guy at a convention and he was somewhat proud of the fact that he had "appeared" in Playboy.

When you whipped out your magazine, you show knowledge, wealth, and pride.

When the other guy whipped out his Playboy, did he show any of the above?

    Good Story!

I'm always hiding the coin magazine on the plane because I don't want to be robbed, not because I'm concerned about being labeled a nerd!

I was sure that the irony was that you recognized the waitress from the Playboy. image

I was going to say something about whipping something else out, but didn't feel that the thread would stay around. image

Or did the waitress tell you about the whizzed coins she received from a 2-page spread in Coin World which called them "select BU"?

One time I whipped out a copy of Numismatic News in a Diner as I was traveling through Virginia and a Coquettish little nymph approached the booth I was at. She began to ask me just what was a Numismaker, I replied it is Numis matist and it involved the study of coins. She seemed intrigued and sat down, uninvited, at my booth. Then she starts with the well what this worth and what's that worth and I said; "hey it's a study and what they are worth is only a fraction of what it is all about" then she starts in with so what do you have? I have to admit she was easy on the eyes so I explained my collection and while she seemed interested, I could see I lost her in the discussion. So, I excused myself and went to the mens room. I come back out and to my amazement she has remembered the coins I said I have and looked up the values. She says with big bright eyes "Wow your rich" and she wants to go with me and see my coin collection.
All of the sudden like a blast I hear this guy screaming the weather report high of 26 degrees here in New Jersey this Monday morning. Woke up fell outta bed dragged a comb across my head found my way down stairs and had a cup and looking up I noticed I was late. Found my coat and grabbed my hat made the bus in seconds flat..............The End
