Sure fire plan to win with Plats in 2007!

renman95renman95 Posts: 7,037 ✭✭✭✭✭
Proposal: When the Proofs come out, noone buy the 1/2 ounce proof singles and noone buy the 4-coin proof set. When the "W" Uncirculated sets come out don't buy the 1/2 unc and don't buy the 4-coin unc set. When the 10th Anniv. set comes out (3 half ounce versions) buy to the mints limit in 24 hours to show demand (probably 5,000, which I think is way to high considering the 2006 W mintages.) This will ensure the Anniv. set has 3 winners instead of 2 throwbacks. Ideally, if the Mint limited the Anniv. set to 2,500 and if we all follow my proposal we'll have another banner/bubble year.

Interesting strategy! I've thought about this myself... The trick is we don't yet know what version of an Unc (if any) will be in the Anniv set...

Since most of the platinum buying seemed to be from this forum, according to a Coin World and Numismatic News recent article, we could create a Platinums-Buyers-Union and could dictate the future of our "bubble" and ensure a great three year series unparalleled in US numismatic history. We have the power.image

We could elect "eric96" as our operations officer since he's got his thumb on some heartbeat, "mrpaseo" could be our treasurer, "bear" can be our court jester and wisdom spouter. We'll need and skipper and a VP to direct traffic and take calls from the Mint, CW NN, CU.imageimage

With any amount of luck half of you guys will be broke by the time these coins are issued. Then I pounce! 1000 sets. Full page CW ad, I can see it now. image

Hmmmm... you mean like the Hunt Brothers?

Everyone sold into them, but in that case there was lots of silver around......on the other hand there is not much Platinum...it could shake loose some 2004 Proofs.

    Not a bad idea!

    Mr. Thigpen,

To not like platinum commems you have plently of it :

The 03,04,05 and 06 four coin sets plus two Unc-legislative sets? In other words you own everything strong in the plat commem series.

And you like to post on the moderns topics............but its normally sarcastic or negative.........I honestly don't understand...........

Well for what its worth you do have good taste in what moderns you buy.

    Best wishes,

It's the overhyping by the individuals that just got into the series that's just gotten to silly levels. I like collecting them just fine.

The best strategy would be to buy nothing. Don't you know the 2007's are going to be overproduced?

People were caught sleeping in 2004 with the proofs and again in 2006 with the W-Uncs. Everyone is now wide awake and ready to buy ........ and lose. image

You know Strike, that is the first thought I had on this thread, but I wasn't so sure as these coin sets do cost quite a bit. Ah maybe, maybe not, but platinum prices will dictate a portion of the price too. Well, I guess we shall see.

That's one of the reasons I started this. Now that the cat is slipping out of the bag and the 2007 uncs are going to be for sale many months more than 2006. I wanted to see how this would be accepted, somewhat tongue in cheek of course. With the high price of plat, many collectors were priced out ensuing lower and lower mintages on the proofs. The mint was caught off guard with the uncs and by their scheduling of items, they will try to capitlize on all us "specullectors." And if we don't "unionize" we will have only one good year in this series. I'd love to have a one ounce MS70 3 year set with historical low mintages and beautiful designs that changed every year.

Sorry CoinBoy, my 2004s stay where they are.

FullStrike, I agree with you. I wonder how the Mint will try to screw us, because you know they will.

OK, here's what we do. Don't buy anything that has a half ounce in it.

The only way to screw this up is 1) buy everything 2) covert mint-op spies on this forum and changes the 10th Anniv. set to quarter ounces.image

Sorry, no strategy will keep mintages in check now. You need look no further than the 2004 - 2006 proofs to see what will happen with the W-Uncs.

In 2004, high prices turned people off to ordering the darned Proof Plats. Look at the escalating mintages in 2005 and 2006- there seems to be no slowing down.

With the 2006 W-Uncs, there was an open mintage that kept buyers away. The Mint suddenly cut off production and before most could react, the coins were all gone. image

    It will not happen again.

I got it! Let's start another "very important dealer" rant and the board will get shut down. Then, we won't be advertising our intentions so openly. In the mean time we petition PCGS to re open the boards and we strike. What do you think?

Thats whats so cool about the mints return policy , If these things are still available after 2 hours...you just send what you dont want back to them .
If they are not still available after 2 hours then losing is not an option

That actually sounds good...getting tired of the endless modern crap vs classic. I like it all. Guess what I buy with my "modern crap" profits...classics for my 7070. I know this "W" phase will be short lived. It's a wave that I want to ride for a bit. The downside is small, unless platinum falls like a rock. We're still in a commodities bull run for the foreseeable future imho. I know there's more substance backing my plats than the JDSU's of the late 1990's. I can't believe I was trading $100 to $200 stocks left and right that had no income, just an idea. Fortunately, and mainly luckily I left in 2000. Then I bought classic slabbed gold for my US Gold Type. Will the plat "W" bubble burst? Oh, I don't know, does the sun rise in the east? Burst may be to harsh, correct sounds better. Everything has its cycle...

First of all the sun does not rise in the east. It is stationary as in it does not move rise or set. The earth rotates and gives us the illusion that the sun is rising and setting, it is an illusion. Just like modern coin collecting is any different than classic coin collecting, just like six figure coins "are a hobby" that is an illusion. No one is moving anything we are plotting our stradegy. Now shhhhhimage

2006 is the first year in a loooonnnngggg time,

where I have paper profits on coins. While the present price

levels of Mint Coins, may need a few years for them

to mature fully, it a warm and fuzzy feeling. Of course, that

may just be my fuzzy fur, but it feels nice.

As for the sun, I have long ordered it to rise in the east and

set in the west. That way, its always earlier for me out here then

for you folks on the east coast.

Let us look at how the De Beers diamond cartel works.

Diamonds are not as rare as folks believe. The Cartel

owns a major part of producing mines and dictates how

many diamonds and what quality and carats are made available

to retailers. They do this by auctions from invited dealers. They bid on

lots of assorted cut diamonds and high bid wins the lot. While it is classified,

It would not suprise me if there were over one billion dollars worth of diamonds

in the De Beers vaults. By controling the availability of product, to a degree that is

somewhat less then the demand, you maintain the price and desireablity of the product.

If the holder's of Mint products exercise control by storing the rare Mint issues untill

demand exceeds the available supply, we will see value maintained and a steady and rational

increase in values. If folks sell into a glutted market, or a market with declining prices, it will only

extend the time required, for the rare issues, to achieve their appropriate price level. The key

is to control supply while allowing demand to mature and increase.

I love you guys, and I think the plan here for us to screw with the Mint (it's not the other way around!) is presented in humor, but it seems that some seriously think that the Mint owes them the opportunity to make five-figure sums in a matter of weeks for doing practically no work.

As some above have pointed out, the 06 uncs (and yes, the 20th anny series too) were rare events -- and the expectation that they repeat themselves shows a sense of entitlement. Expect that other board members will roll their eyes, at a minimum.

If you follow the pattern of sales and pricing from some other issues, it could be very helpful. In 1999 the Silver Proofs did not get into many dealers hands due to the distribution schema. The next year, EVEYRYONE bought 2000 Silver Proof sets, you can still buy them today for less than issue price. Then after being burned in 2000, the dealer backed off on their orders. Now the 2001 Silver Proofs sell for in excess of $100.

This same pricing pattern can be seen is some of the SAE Proof years in the 90s. My point being that it may be time to take a year off on Plats and then get back in. Just MHO on this.
