20th ASEs in shipping box - how long will PCGS grade them...

I know there are quite a few people holding on to 20th Anniversary ASEs still in the shipping box for grading with the 20th Anniversary designation. How long will PCGS still accept these boxes for the designation or will they always do it as long as the postal seal is not broken?

More than a few of us have sent in the sets without the unopened Mint box and got the 20th Ann. designation on the holders. In my case, I sent the original Mint invoice for the 3 sets that I sent to PCGS and have gotten them graded and shipped in a week. I couldn't believe it!

I'm not saying you should do what I did, but in my case I didn't like the sound of the loose capsules floating around in the Mint box, ergo I opened it to see if any were damaged. None appeared to be and I put the capsules firmly back into the display boxes.

I didn't answer your question, obviously, but you can consider the alternative method I used. Have you called PCGS to see if they still want them submitted that way?

PCGS will designate and grade them indefinitely! If the shipping date is prior to 11/11/2006, they'll even designate them as First Strikes as long as the seal on the original shipping box is undisturbed!

Again I state that the First Strike program began in 2005 yet there are many 1994, 1995, 1997 First Strike Designated Silver Eagles on Ebay!

As time goes by, unopened boxes of SAE 20th Anniversary Set will go up in price especially when the true value of the 2006-W Unc coin gets recognized by the collecting community.

Edited to add: Sending in opened boxes is a crap shoot to say the least.

I can echo the last post -- I sent in three loose coins, out of ignorance, and without any special request, and they all three came back labeled 20th. The very thing that the PCGS website says they WON'T do.

I also have seen people get the 20th Ann. Designation ONLY on the RP, so it seems they are not being consistent.

I later submitted 6 more sets still sealed in Fedex Mint Boxes, so they, of course, get the 20th designation.

Sounds like the only coin that will be a "for sure 20th" in the future is the RP, if they are taking opened sets. Just an observation.
