So you Houston folk...what should we be doing outside the show????

You should eat..folk here like to go out and eat and there are some very nice dining experiences to be found here, just ask your concierge (Vic and Anthony's steak house is just a few blocks from the show). You can go to a Rockets basketball game (walking distance too), if that sort of thing gives you a thrill. You can go to the Texana room at the Houston public library...very cool old documents, maps, archival type material...I know it's kind of kinky but it is pretty interesting and semi walkable. You can have a tour of minute maid park where the HOUSTON ASTROS baseball team plays (walking distance, they don't start at home till April 2nd). You can take a cab to NASA and visit the flight museum. You can walk the downtown tunnel system (hey! take a map) looking at stuff and buying/eating what you want. You can take a cab ride down Westheimer just to see the heart of the city, start at the Galleria (dont take spouse or significant other unless you have tooooo much money)..."if you can't buy it on Westheimer, they don't make it." While you're cruising Westheimer (about 20 miles long), slip over a couple of blocks south and cruise the Richmond strip too and stop at some of the drinkeries and get smashed with a bunch of 20 somethings (you might get lucky or you might not). then there's a cool exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science going on now, it's about frogs...all kinds of cool, live frogs. If you are into the museum stuff, we're covered up with cool exhibits. There's plenty to do here, if you want it, it's all here. Have fun, I'll stop by your table and say hi.

I don't remeber Houston being so bad, but then again, I haven't been there since Katrina....my guess is that has really changed things!

The reason that I ask is that the promotor made it sound like the best thing since sliced bread....

from the responses posted here, doesnt even sound safe much less entertaining.... see the review posted about the convention center area below....

I do hope that I am proven wrong....and I'll let you all know...

I went to Houston for about four days this most recent november. I stayed downtown, at the Hilton Americas.
This area of Houston is an absolute ghost town. On a Friday afternoon, all the shops and restaurants were closed. There is a tunnel system with shopping and food under the city--everything was closed on Friday afternoon and was closed all weekend. There is a mall with very few stores-it is closed all weekend as well.
We had to walk for a half hour one day just to find lunch. We were there with a group of people and we all agreed that the city was just dead.
We did go to the zoo, which is about 15 min outside of where we were staying. It was okay..just an average zoo, maybe a little small. We also went to the downtown aquarium, which was pretty fun.
Overall, if you're going to houston..don't bother with this area. Maybe stay in galveston or something like that, though we didn't go there. Definitey don't bother with this area of Houston--we were all very disappointed. I even heard other guests at the hotel talking about how the city was a ghostown, so it was not just my opinion.

I'm a member of the Houston club and the security will be as tight as possible, so there needn't be any unnecessary fears.
There is not much going on in the downtown area after business hours and weekends, save some bars and such.
The Montrose area (my own neighborhood) is the hippest part of town.

what are ya,lls likes and dislikes and i might suggest an area of town to hop around.
mainly the west side starting at the galleria mall to westhimer west to hwy 6.
also the richmond/chimney rock/fountainview area has some lively spots if you
like the night life thing.

downtown at night is only good when theres a big show in town
other than that, its the underground tunnel where its like a mini mall.
i just remembered the tunnels downtown.
not the greatest attraction in the city but if your downtown on a weekday
might be fun to walk through.

ha, I understand about the review. The bowl game was just before christmas and the Rutgers fans hit downtown in mass. It was dead with many people off for the holidays. A group of about 50 entered the nearby lunch establishment and had no problems getting a table at a popular place. We laughed that they probably thought this was a normal thing. They also probably laughed that there wasn't much traffic. I'm guessing the November review was around thanksgiving. Locals know different.

As far as security, you do have to be careful but common sense should be enough to avoid most trouble. Things like, locking your car and not leaving packages or briefcases out in plain view. Don't walk into a place and flashing a large wad of cash. Be aware of your surroundings. Also, I would not honk your horn at a car or another person. It will only get you in trouble. No doubt there is trouble out there just don't make yourself an easy target, let the next person do that.

Things to do this weekend. The Rockets are in town Friday night and play a few blocks away from the show. The auto show is also in town for the weekend(It is the one with new cars, which allows JB to attend the show). The museums also have fairly decent displays.

The food is good, especially the bbq, mexican and seafood. I would ask for suggestions from the locals, everyone has their preferences.

Jon, and others,

The coin show at the George Brown Convention Center is next to the Toyota Center where the pro basketball team plays, if they're in town. Also, about 15 minutes away, my son-in-law manages the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott. His hotel is located at the Houston Medical Center/Reliant Park where there is the large Houston Auto Show this weekend.

Security at his hotel is excellent, the car show will be fun for many, too. If interested, contact a.burch@concordhotels.com, there are still some rooms available. If traveling with family, the San Antonio Sea World is definitely worth the 2 hour trip.

I just came back, we visited there over Christmas. Goober's reference to Papadeaux's restaurant made my mouth water, love that stuff and wish I could get to the show and meet some of you in person.

2 blocks away from the convention center is a do not miss place for a steak. It is called Strip House.

a must place to eat.

Of all the cities I go to Houston to me would be the safest to walk around. It really is not bad to walk around.
