With the recent rise in Copper prices have you started seperating your pre 1982 pennies from the post 1982 pennies?

Yes I have, but I've heard that pre 82 pennies are a lower grade of copper, and aren't worth saving. Is this true?

Put me down for the "don't give a hoot" category.

    At least for now.

    Lord M...

I tried several times to edit your post...

it kept saying...."You cannot edit this post ,you are not the original author"

all i was going to add was that you liked pennies anyway.image

I might as well separate them just for the sake of it, but I don't search through bank rolls.

Hey, I like pennies just fine.

But sorting through the modern pocket-change ones, just fer a little scrap copper? Nope. Fuhgeddaboutit. I don't give a hoot.

For now, as I said. If copper suddenly skyrockets and makes it worthwhile to skim through 'em, I'd do it.

Now that they are illegal to melt, it's somewhat irrelevant.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

My YN does this and has a small bucket started. He expressed concern that the Secret Service will come calling.......

Melting is a non-issue. 90% and 40% silver coins are traded as bullion and most never gets melted. Copper coins will be able to trade as bullion without being melted as well.

I've been doing that for a while.

Have around 25lbs of pre-1982 cents. Aiming for 100lbs by year's end.

I've calculated that after figuring out my time for the sorting and handling, the storage and freight costs to refiners, and the opportunity cost of not using that time and money more productively, I think I can make a net profit of 25 to 30 cents an hour by sorting pennies!

It's 95% copper. I don't know how that translates to "grade", but I suppose if someone is looking for "pure" copper, it wouldn't suffice.

    I've been seperating my

    Blank Planchets

    and

    No Date Off-Center Strikes

    for copper's vrs. zinc's for
    about 15 years or more.

At some point (probably after I'm gone)
someone will want real Pre-82 Copper Blank
Planchet Cents, and same for Pre-82 N.D.
Off-Center Cents. I'll have quantities of 'em.

They're easy to seperate by either look, or
a quick toss on the small scale........

I liked the "Don't give a Hoot" option better myself.

Not worth the time or trouble...yet.

For those that say it isn't worth their time "yet". When it is actually worth your time and you start searching for them you won't be finding them, at least not in the numbers you would now. Those that did the leg work before it became "worth it" will reap any rewards.

Imagine all those folks that didn't take 90% silver out of circulation way back when it wasn't "worth it". Now that it is "worth it" see how much 90% silver you find in circulation today.

Cladiator's got it. NOW is the time to start saving if you're going to do it. I have just started to do so. The base metals are beginning to jump again. Look at nickel. At some point, possibly soon, it WILL be worth the trouble. By then, if not before, the supply will dwindle quickly and you may wish you had started saving sooner. image
