Nice to meet you.

Hello everyone. I've never been much of a message board person so please forgive me if my etiquette is not up to par. First I would like to thank jmj3esq for unknowingly getting me to sign up, but more on that later. Years ago I stopped collecting and sold almost all my coins because we needed the money. The only thing I kept was my nearly complete collection of walkers plus a few odds and ends. Shortly before Christmas, my then 9-year-old daughter (just turned 10 the other day and is the oldest of 5 kids) decided she wanted to start collecting coins. After looking at an old price guide of mine, she decided to start on Franklin half-dollars. Being that our funds are extremely limited, we decided to target EF40 and better coins. We quickly started collecting Jefferson nickels in AU50 and better and are working on both sets at the moment.

Needless to say, she's got me back on coins. I've since picked up my 1916 and 1921-s walkers in a lowly G-4 (hey, I said our funds are limited) but still need the 1921. I'll pick up a '21 in G-4 sometime when I find it. Before you laugh, let me explain. I started that set when I was a teenager (almost 20 years ago) and pretty much took any coin I could find. So I'm not going to put a good coin in it now. Although most of the later coins are in good condition, the oldest coins are all pretty much G-4 through VF-20. Therefore, I'll save my money for other things and get the cheapest '21 I can find. At least it's not '21-D still needed.

So I’d have something to work on while I find the walker, I have started building the Peace Dollar set in EF-40 or better (would have done Morgan’s as I've always loved them, but again...limited funds). I traded in some odds and ends for an EF-40 1921, an EF-40 1928 and an AU-50 1927. This Friday, I plan on making my first payment towards an EF-40 1934-S in layaway at the local coin shop. After I have that paid off, my plan is to pick up a Peace dollar a month if possible. I'll probably start Liberty nickels and Mercury Dimes during that time period as well.

Back to my daughter, we only have to get 3 more Franklins and we're done with that. The Jefferson's will take a bit longer but we wanted to find another coin to collect after the Franklins. That's what got me looking around this site. I originally came looking for a list of coins in the Dansco 7070 Type Set Album. I found great pictures from the album posted by Barry and others by Baley. Thanks to those pictures, I was able to determine that most of the book would remain empty for some time. Therefore, we have decided to go with Roosevelt dimes next.

Since getting back into the hobby, the one thing I have to say has surprised me the most, how well my daughter gets treated. At the coin store, they have gotten to know us and treat us like we are big spenders even though we're buying nickels. The one owner invited us to attend a meeting of a coin club he is the secretary of. We went and my daughter has not stopped talking about it. She took her Jefferson and Franklin Dansco albums and a lot of people looked them over and had nothing but kind things to say. There is even a teen girl in the club whose name has become one of the top 10 words out of my daughter’s mouth. And then, I'm looking around this site and I happen to read a message posted by jmj3esq. He recently hit his 1-year anniversary on this board so he's giving away a Morgan at random to anybody that post a reply to his message??? Can this be real? So on Thursday, I sign up for the message board. Unfortunately, I didn't get my acceptance email from the Webmaster until today and the cutoff 5pm Friday, so I didn't get to reply and enter the drawing. Well, after looking around the board today, I've found several messages about giveaways to YN's or people that just send stuff to people out of kindness. What??? Maybe it's because I was a teen when I started collecting, but people didn't treat me like this. I hope my daughter sticks with collecting and learns something from this whole community about kindness.

So, thank you to Barry and Baley for the information I was looking for. Thank you to jmj3esq for posting a message that I couldn't ignore. And thank you to whomever it is that runs this site.

Rob

I believe this was a little long winded, but I could have gone on for at least a few hundred more words.

Hello Rob and Welcome! My 9yr old son Matthew started becoming interested in coins a couple of years ago, and our first trip to the coin shop was a blast! Even though he had a LOT of questions and very little money to spend, the owner went completely out of his way to answer his questions and even sold him a very nice '21 Peace (MS64) for $1. I would say we spent well over 2hrs in his shop that day. Since then, we visit at least weekly and the owner is always just as nice as he was the first time. I feel he actually looks forward to our visits... I know I do.

    Regards,
    Trey (2bucks)

Great first post Rob! I collect "everything" too. I think that the early 20th century series are a fine goal on a modest budget. Problem with collecting everything is that the budget gets stretched pretty thin in a hurry. I think I returned to the hobby about the same age that you did. I don't have a daughter but it sounds like a great way for you to spend time enjoying the hobby together.

This is an excellent place round out you numismatics skills and gain knowledge. Most folks on this site are quite agreeable and very hospitable. Ignore the "trolls" and other miscreants and you'll be OK as these are a vast minority here.
