Coin Show Report - White Plains, NY

Yesterday I went to the four-times-a-year, three-day, 75+ dealer show in White Plains, NY. I estimate that only about 50-60 of the dealers at this show are coin dealers, the rest are stamp dealers. (By the way, usually the stamp dealers look very lonely when I'm at this show, but yesterday there were a fair number of people looking at stamps.)

Of the four White Plains shows, this one is usually the second or third best: The Thanksgiving show is the best (held in a different location, it attracts a different mix of dealers) and the January and October shows are usually tied for second. The April show frequently feels "tired" (or, if the show's not tired, then perhaps I'm just tired of shows by that point!).

This show usually has a lot smaller crowd of collectors than the very crowded Parsippany, NJ monthly shows. Yesterday, however, I though there was a very good crowd on the floor, including a decent number of kids and beginning collectors.

The show was lively enough that a dealer I know bought an 1836 reeded edge half in an ICG MS-63 slab on Friday and sold it on Saturday.

Frequently, this show just has a lot of "stuff" (MS Morgans, Walkers and classic commems), but not a lot of really desirable coins, so I frequently spend time with the exonumia guys, looking at medals, tokens, Confederate bonds, etc., which is fun and something I usually don't get to do at most of the other shows I go to. Yesterday, however, I noticed an unusual number of Classic Head (1834-1838) half eagles and quarter eagles. Usually I see one or two of the coins at this show and yesterday I must have seen at least a half a dozen!

All-in-all, it was a good show, although I didn't make any purchases. (I almost bought a Confederate bond and a couple of medals, but, in the end, decided not to.)

This was my first White Plains coin show. I went on Sunday (bad mistake) and arrived about 2 PM (bigger mistake). I think going to any coin show the last day of a multiple day coin show is a waste of time. I was under the impression that the show was over at 4 or 5 PM on Sunday. Apparently it was more like 3 PM, and when I arrived at 2, most dealers were gone or packing up to leave. I'll give the show another try in April, hopefully arriving early on Saturday morning.

If your work schedule allows it, the day to hit the WESPNEX shows is Friday afternoon. With any luck that's when I'll be attending in April.

I find that Fridays are the best days to attend a multiple day show, with Saturday being the second best (but only in the morning).
