By listening for how many times and ways in the negotiations he subtly (or overtly) proclaims his own integrity/honesty to me. image

thisnamztaken came up with the tip-off that always means "watch out" to me (in any business activity, btw).

When, in response to your offer, he states, "I can't do it, I have that much INTO the coin!"

Why is it I can always guess what the dealer paid for a coin but I can never pick the winning lottery number?

In defense of the noble dealers on this board...
This happens to be an area where there are just tons of unscrupulous individuals and many shady characters out to make a buck at any expense. Nobody is more aware of this fact than the dealers themselves. What this ultimately means is that the honest dealers who respect their customers regardless of how much they know (and, perhaps, how much money they will spend) deserve twice the amount of credit for their efforts. One great dealer can make up for 10 shysters...

I guess, on some level, I really do not care if he/she is lying or not. If a dealer has a coin that I want at a price that I am willing to pay, the rest of the stuff is fluff. In the end, I have found that the BS dealers that are selling a lie and not a coin, don't have quality coins that I would want, anyway. The people that sell the quality material don't need to lie, the coins say all that needs to be said.

    The question should have been:

How do you know if a dealer is not a liar.

I don't think I have ever been told the truth from a dealer (Evading would be the best that I have ever gotten from any of them.

Now I'm sure that there are many honest guys, notably some that are members of this very board. But besides used car dealers, coin dealers are a bunch of liars and thieves. IMO

I remm asking a dealer straight up if a coin had been cleaned (that dirty filthy guy from Ramapo) and to my face he said no. Of course the next 3 dealers that i showed the coin to all said it was cleaned.

many of them have taken the white lie to such extreme lenghts that i do not believe any of them now.

    Good for you.

I took a few, VERY FEW, minutes to read this post and I'm absolutely unsure of what it's purpose is?

How do you know when anyone is lying to you? You either find out or you don't, but what purpose does making dealers the focus of this thread serve exactly? In fact, what purpose does this thread serve?

I have always lived my life, both in business and outside of business (this is so my kiddies can see me in action image) by a set of standards that includes not lying. Now, I realize not everyone does this and that's THEIR problem and I guess the problem of THOSE they lie to. To some here on these boards it might just seem implausible that a dealer does not lie...that lying is just something he or she is supposed to do. But why in God's name would someone arbitrarily think this? I'm absolutely positive that I've been lied to by collectors image....yes, it is true! I have actually caught them and confronted them when it's happened (this by the way is the best way to get a problem resolved...you know...by actually disgussing the problem with the person directly - a new and different concept for some so I would highly recommend trying this...the results can often times be amazing!!) It has not happened often, as far as I know (this goes back to that question of how do you know ANYONE has lied to you?), but I can assure you I'd never post a thread asking: How do you know when a collector's lying to you?

    Carry on....I guess.

For those of you that dont think a dealer has ever been truthful, you havent worked with the right dealers.

MP got it right in his post...and I have been lied to by dealer and collector. I usually make a mental note and go about my business...and when it comes to sell or buy again to the said parties, they often dont get a call.
