Have coin collections become too valuable?

There certainly have been a lot of major collections coming to market recently. Could the sale of these collections be influenced by what their owners perceive to be excessive value?

High insurance costs.

High opportunity loss costs.

Security concerns.

Could these factors be draining the enjoyment out of having the collections?
All glory is fleeting.

They could just be trying to enjoy the money instead of letting their heirs give it away.

I'd say yes, plus 1. nearing a peak in rare coins 2. Getting ready to retire within a few years and enjoying some of the fruits of your labor.

A lot of baby boomers are heading into retirement and can use the money for other purposes. There should be a steady stream
of collections coming on the market for the next 20-30 years or so. A good time to be in the auction business.

Collections aren't becoming too valuable. It's the dollar becoming worth less that is the problem. A factor of 4X in just the past 25 years.

And the ROADRUNNER Nails it! Right on the head and that is the crux of the matter entirely. Can you imagine buying coins in the 1988 thru 1990 era and paying those prices for small type, commems, Morgan dollars and Saints in MS 65??? You will never get right side up, lest we have another round of inflation with coins rising to stratosphere numbers like say gold at $1500 as an example.

The above is an opinion others may vary. image

Most of the top collections were started many years ago. The owners are now well up in years, eyesight going, and concern that their heirs will not know how to dispose of the collection properly.

I don't think these large collections are coming to auction because the owners think we are at a market high.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Really? How do you know that?

Roadrunner raises important points about the decline of the dollar. If you were a European collector of US coins the market would not appear to be so appreciated.

There is too much liquidity in the system. When it starts to get drained out, illiquid assets (like coins) will get crushed.
