need advice on ebay purchase...

I won this last night Ebay Link and paid immediately after the close. I get an email this morning from the seller (looks legit, address matches and such) saying the paypal account is closed and please send to a new address. So I check paypal and sure enough, the payment is "unclaimed" and I was able to cancel it. I also got an ebay notice that he requested my user info and all the info matched for him. This is the email that I got from him.

SIR JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T GET MY OTHER MESSAGES LAST NIGHT ON EBAY YOU PURSHASED A 1830 BUST HALF DOLLAR I HAD TWO PAYPAL ACCOUNTS THE ONE YOUR PAYMAENT WENT TOO IS INACTIVE SO IF YOU WOULD GO BACK TO YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT AND IN THE DETAILS UNDER ACTION CANCEL THAT PAYMENT
GO UP TO SEND MONEY PLEASE SEND YOUR PAYMENT AMOUNT TO ************************ SORRY FOR THE TROUBLE I APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS

As far as his claim of "in case you didn't get my email last night", all I got was an email saying, "THANK YOU FOR YOUR PURCHASE PLEASE RESPONDED WITH YOUR METHOD OF PAYMENT PLEASE VISIT MY LISTINGS IN THE FUTURE". At least the style matches.

I know that if I send payment to an address not listed in the auction I lose paypal protection. Everything looks legit and the amount is low. But of course, a few red flags here. Anyone have any advice?

    Red Flags.

    Neg 1 Feedback
    Wrong Paypal address on account
    ALL CAPITAL LETTERS

If you plan to pay, first, make the seller update their paypal address with e-bay. Then if you pay via paypal again, you have sent to the account e-bay provided you.

    Anyone have any advice?

It's too late, but as a rule, I advise not bidding on items from sellers with overall negative feedback.

I'm curious as to why you would bid on a coin being offered by a seller with a feedback of -1.

You bid on an auction with a -1 feedback seller?

    What were you thinking?

You bid on a seller with a neg.....? Forget it, I see that this has been covered.

I would not find myself in this situation, however, if it was me, I would find a way out of the deal... or try to get a COD, I know that sounds crazy, but it's a cheap coin, and I see you have perfect feedback. All in all, you may eat the 35 bucks to learn a lesson.

    Sorry.

I bid because I've wanted an early half for a pocket piece and he accepted paypal. Plus the acount hasn't been used in awhile so it appeared someone might be trying to go on the honest track.

This is what I sent him, let's see what he has to say.

    "Hey Rick,

This sale/auction has red flags all over it (possible hijjacked acount). I'll tell you what I'll do. Send me the item and as soon as I get it, I give you my word that I will immediately pay via paypal to your new address and include an extra $5.00. I will also leave you great feedback so that you may start rebuilding yours. My feedback speaks for itself both as a seller and as a buyer. The only reason that I bid on your auction with your feedback was because you accepted paypal and paypal protects me against fraud. If I send to another address I lose that fraud protection.

Let me know what you think,

    Robert"

I agree with Mr. Paseo. Send the money (if you care about your feedback) and cross your fingers.

There are 2 potential outcomes: 1. you end up out $35 and consider it a lesson learned or 2. you get the coin and consider yourself very lucky.

that sounds about as good as it can given the situation.

    COD sounds good, to me.

Your email was as good as possible.

Do NOT pay to an alternate PayPal account, unless
a live person at PayPal confirms that you should do so.

    slipgate,

I'm a newbie, so you'll get much more seasoned advice from others here. IMO, you have good reason to shift the trust burden in this case. You've already acted in good faith by paying the account listed so you have good reason to send him a message saying that you want delivery of the coin prior to payment. Just an idea, not sure how it might affect your own feedback...

By the way, I appreciated the photo of your coin imaging set up. I had just returned from ordering a "copy stand" when I saw TheLiberator's post ( with all due respect to Tbird66, I couldn't build a tongue depressor with popsicle sticks ). Looks like you use your set up for more than just coins?

If you had published my email address on a public forum for no good reason I'd be out for blood.

I don't think the"I give you my word" part is going to work

Ijust spoke with him on the phone and he is cool with sending it and me paying after I get it. His email address (above) is not good (I'll edit it out anyway).

Hey Razzle - I use that set up only for coins. Go Nittany Lions!
