Any input on what's going on with the date on this Lincoln Cent???

A strange sort of 'bar' in the date (look at the right side of the 0), but I can't find any variety that matches. Anyone have an idea of what it may be?

Well, if you looked for matches, you probably saw how many 1970s ddo's there are that involve a bar above or below the 70, so anything's possible. A closeup of the date would help.

While it may not be anything important, it's definately there. It doesn't look to me like an overdate but it is odd that, even to the naked eye, the 0 has a shape like a funky 7 in it. You can see in the close up that the zero is fully formed, and you can even see the outer edge of the right hand side, but just inside of that is the straight bar that goes to the top and then across a bit.
It caught my eye, and got my curiousity up. After spending 3 hours digging around some old original rolls, its fun to find something different!

63RD, looks like a large date. The bar that you mentioned doesnt add any premium, nor does it subract. Lincolns are common with blobs and die chips, particularly in the date and "LIBERTY."

thanks for the info LCM... I appreciate it!
The coin is definately not one of the nice ones from the group I looked over, just did not know about the blob.

Hey TonedBuff, David kind of filled in all the blanks already, but let me just add that to date--there are no known overdates in the entire Lincoln series----not a one.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

It's the result of post-Mint damage.

Something smashed the "0" in the date.

I'm sorry to say it's not an overdate, repunched
date, re-cut, or any type of minting error........

Never seen a die chip, or "blob" as he put it, to the east of the 0, on any Lincoln. And on 1970s cents, you more often find die chips on the reverse, they are excellent die markers. Can we see LIBERTY close up? Some of the 1970s ddo's are listed as being doubled on the date and LIBERTY.

    Fred,
I think you are right. Something caught the 0 along a straight line and squished it to the left a bit. I looked at it under 20x magnification, and it was evident the 0 had been neatly squished, giving the appearance of an overdate a bit...
    Cool to figure it out!
    thanks.

I had, but sometimes you need some direction to know what you are looking for/at.

I had not really thought of post mint damage, to be honest. It looked too much like something odd in striking.
Besides, it gave everyone something to do for a minute besides post on the flame threads.image
