18 Coin 20th Century Major Design Type No Gold
I'm seeing several threads addressing the 20 coin concept. I like collecting by type and the idea of a 20 coin collection is intriguing. This is not to say that my entire coin collection would be soley devoted to 20 coins. It would just be one particular direction amidst a collective effort. I am just trying to figure out a collection that uses the entire PCGS 20 coin box (without going over into another box) with one focus. Using a 20th Century Major Obverse Design Type No Gold I count 18. If I start to fill the other 2 spaces I would be altering the Major Design concept or am I missing a coin or two?

The cool thing about this set is that you could do a low-grade, common date set for about $100, or you could spend many thousands procuring high grade, key dates.
The only hesitation I have saying that this is all of the major obverse designs is that the state quarter Washington quarter seems like a seperate type, even under this very loose definition.
But, you could justify that exclusion by saying that you are ommitting Commems and Bullion (along with Gold) -- the state quarters are arguably commems...
Cool idea!

I enjoyed the QDB type coin book very much, but my one pet peeve was that he never defined what he considered a seperate type. For example, the tiny initial added to the Jefferson Nickel qualified as a seperate type, as did the high releif Peace dollar, but the 1944-1946 lincoln cents with changed composition did NOT qualify as a type. Also, in my opinion, the chin on the 21 Morgan is a MUCH more drastic change than the initials on the Jefferson, and it also didn't qualify. Obviously everyone will come to differrent conclusions about what to include and what not to include, it just seems like an odd ommision to never define the methodology...
