Martin Luther King Jr Commem?
I searched the board and did not see anything related to this so if it has been posted before forgive me. Why hasn't the mint produced a Martin Luther King Junior commemorative? For some reason that popped into my head earlier. We have the Botanic Garden, Jackie Robinson, San Francisco Mint, Yellowstone National Park, and Dolley Madison commemoratives. All of those hold a special place in the history of this country but I wouldn't place any of them higher than MLK. I'm not jumping to any conclusions here just an honest question.

<< <i>I suggest you look at the final sale totals for the Jackie Robinson and Black Patriots coins to see why they haven't minted one. >>
No disrespect to Jackie Robinson or the Black Patriots but MLK is more popular and more marketable than both of these combined.

Sorry but the mint really has a small market when you look at the big picture.
No matter what the subject is the mints ability to contact the right folks is limited to just advertising.
That said, the mint has very little to say about what they must produce. The lawmakers handle that.
than on a commemmorative that few will ever see. Any leader with a
dream and the determination to carry it out deserves such respect. That
he was so successful makes this even more true.
It would better to get all the presidents et al off the coins but if we must
have people who represent LIBERTY and the ideals of this country than
who better than King?

I say put him on paper money. No real people on coins.

Why keep the same design for a 100 years? Keep it changing.

Actually that was my first thought but my next was how unrealistic it would be. The commem program seems more realistic. I do agree with everything you've said though.
