Dansco 7070 Type set- I want advice.

I have just come into $350, and I am going to the big Houston coin show - what should I buy for my album? I have come to learn from you all.

I've put a few coins in since I started it. I have a PCGS MS 67 clad 25c and a PCGS MS67 1973 Ike. I would love to give you all photos, but my camera - fu is weak - hopefully I will rememdy that by attending the seminar t the upcoming show.

So - what do I buy? I consider it "free" money. I have an additional budget of around $200.

Gimme some solicited advice. I may not follow it, but I love to read it.

decide first if you want to fill a lot of slots or just one, then advising is easier

    I think I'd rather fill 1-2 slots.

In that case, buy one or two of the tough coins:

seated dollar (motto and No Motto)
    trade dollar
    classic head large cent
    20c

Find a coin that you really like. Be it Bust or Seated. Copper or silver. How about an XF or AU large cent or half cent? or a late bust quarter 1831-1838 type? Seated or Trade dollar? a twenty cent piece is a good suggestion also--maybe you can try to find any other date than a 1875-S which is common. Bob

The last one that I filled was the early Seated Dollar; I would agree with going for one of those.

Question: You quoted 2 MS67 coins as being in your set. Are you trying to put together a set of sharp, uncirculated coins, or a set that has an example of everything?

You are not going to be picking up nice uncirculated Seated and Trade dollars in the $350 price range; you are shooting for a nice VF-XF.

If you are trying to match the condition of the current coins, then I would suggest looking at 2 and 3 cent pieces since you can get some nice coins in that price range, and non collectors always think it is neat to see those coins. (Many don't know they existed.)

I am trying to put together as nice a set as I can.

I figure that I can do the moderns in a little higher grades, as they are available, though I'm not adverse to spending some good money on filling this thing. I know I'm not going to find 67 level early stuff, but I think I can get good looking stuff over time.

I'm going to the Houston show as well. I'll have almost an identical budget as you. I'll be taking my 7070 album and my buffalo nickel album. My primary goal is to get some common date AU58 buffalos to upgrade the second page of that set. I'll also be looking for a nice shield nickel and a with motto XF45+ quarter that has a real origional look to match my other two seated quarters. Believe it or not, the with motto (later date) is harder to find in an origional state than the earlier varieties.

As far as what you should buy. You should buy what ever catches your eye that you dont have, in at least your minimum grade.

I agree with tryong for one of the Seated dollars. For some reason I am having a hard tme finding one to fit my type set, so if you see a nice one in your price range, Id grab it.

Thanks. I haven't one hundred percent decided yet, but you guys are giving me some food for thought. Ultimately I will buy what I want, but I like hearing your thoughts.

A nice 20 cent piece was one of the toughtest to find in my set. You can see my set here.

It really depends on what grades you are looking for in a set. I see that you have a few 67s, but certainly, you aren't going to try for a complete set like that. Tell us more about your plan.

the toughest for me was the seated dollar with motto. I had a nice AU in the slot, but wanted a touch better detail, so I upgraded to an AU-55. Took about a year to find the perfect coin. Too many have been dipped and many are banged up with contact marks all over the place. Finally got my 55 at the FUN show Jan 2007.

Got my twenty cent piece from a Heritage auction.

I would go for the seated dollar I filled my 20c and Trade dollar with nice looking coins for $160 & $100 respectively. The seated dollars are easily $200 for the same grade. My theme for the commemorative half dollars were classic silver commems with a design I liked and so far I'm having a hard time finding those in affordable grades. If I came into that amount of money for my Dansco I would go for the seated dollar first and then look for the commmems.

tmot, you have a nice set.

My plan is to make a really nice set - the best I can afford. I know I can't go MS 67 all the way through (yet), but I would like to spend my money wisely.

I am leaning towards one of the dollars, or the twenty cent, although I would kind of like a really nice Texas Commemorative.

I just don't know. rest assured that I will be researching all of your suggestions over the weekend.

I will be the contrarian. You can probably fill your Liberty Nickel(2 spots) and Three cent nickel slots(and possibly your shield nickels) with MS60+ coins with your budget, and still have a little left over. If you plan on filling every spot, why not buy the coins everyone thinks are dirt right now. These coins can pretty much only go sideways or up. As for other series, some have plenty of room for correction. Seated coins are super hot right now, and I would not buy them right now for a type set - especially any of the "arrows" coins.

As others have said, most of the later coins aren't too difficult in the nice AU to Gem range, you'll be able to find them easily at any time.

Your windfall at a show might find you a nice capped bust coin or two, and possibly a few seated pieces.
I'd leave the seated dollars for later, ditto the early cents especially the very tough classic head cent, unless you see nice one with little or no porosity at a good price.

An underrated coin, perfect for your budget range and quite hard to find well struck with full stars, is an unc shield nickel with rays. Of all the coins I have ever sold, that is the one I regret. If you find a nice one at a decent price, buy it.

Here's a thread dedicated to building the Dansco 7070 type set that contains pointers, experience and information from several people who have done so or are in the process of finishing.

I would advise getting the 20 cent piece first also. Good luck with this project, as you can see by tmot99's set, it's very worthwhile and fun.

tmot99, Wonderful type set! Yours is better than mine for the most part, but I really enjoy mine nonetheless. Mine was originally a Whitman Type set, but I upgraded to the more complete Dansco album.

Having said that, since I wasn't all that interested in buying two seated dollar coins, and since I already had my 1799 Bust Dollar from my old Whitman type set, I did a little creative altering of my 7070 to include the Bust dollar in place of one of the seated bucks.

As to the commem's holes, I have a AU58 Iowa (my home state), a AU58 Oregan Trail (my favorite commem), a AU50 1892 Coumbia Exposition (since it was the first of the commmem's) and I used one of these holes to display the reverse of a Walking Liberty Half which I think is beautiful.
