1861-S Paquet Reverse

I was hoping to elicit some help from the senior guys on this board. I want to know if anyone knows if this coin has been the subject of forgeries in recent years. I had someone contact me claiming to have one in a NTC Holder. As you can imagine my suspicion, so if I do get a chance to see it I want to be prepared. I was wondering if anyone has any background on spotting forgeries or knows of this coin has been subject to counterfeiting.

Here's just about everything I know about the 1861-S Paquet Reverse double eagle. Heritage Auction

I'd love to see pictures of the allegedly slabbed NTC example. I'd be surprised if no one has tried to counterfeit this yet.

Remember, overgrading and overpricing, which is legal, can be almost as profitable as counterfeiting.

Overgrading because of poor skills or knowledge is one issue. Overgrading with intent to defraud is another, and yes illegal issue.

I never saw a counterfeit 1861-S Paquet, but in the 5-1/2 years I was at ANACS we never saw a genuine one, either!

I saw a picture of the NTC coin (months ago). I doubt that it is a counterfeit, but I suspect that it has been repaired.

I've seen more than fifty of them over the years. Never saw or heard of a fake.

NTC alone raises big question marks in my mind. I would pass unless you see the coin in person and are a good grader.

In order to make a credible fake the counterfeiter needs a high grade problem free coin from which to cast his die. This coin is extremely rare in high grade and problem free condition and its unlikely the typical counterfeiter will ever get ahold of one to make his false dies. Being in a third world holder, I would be more concerned that the coin has problems that keep it out of a top tier slab.
