A most interesting week at the shop!

A most interesting week at the shop. We are located in Utah, less than 2 hours from Las Vegas. If you will remember your history, Howard Hughes lived in Las Vegas back in the 1970’s, buying up the town. Mr. Hughes surrounded himself with members of the LDS (Mormon) faith at the top levels of his empire. A lot of those people have retired here in St George.

Last week we bought a large collection (hoard might be a better word) of casino chips and token that were saved by a top Summa (Hughes) executive who was in charge of some of his properties. Some of these chips were previously quite rare with well less than 20 known.

Yesterday, another former Hughes aide collection came in. The son of a top aide who recently died brought it in. It contained letters addressed to Howard Hughes from Real Estate agents try to sell him properties and such. Talk about an interesting glimpse into history! This collection had a lot of historical letters and such, plus one small 2x2 box. It contained a very nice group of CC dollars, most mint state from 1878 to 1892 (no 89 or 93).

While talking to the son, I mentioned how interesting that must have been to have had a dad that was close to Hughes. He said that his dad never talked about him, because that was part of the deal. He did tell us that back in 1972, at a Christmas party he attended for the half dozen top insiders and families, Howard came into the room spoke briefly with a few people, turned to this young man (who was 10 at the time) and handed him $10,000 in cash and said Merry Christmas and left the room.

Pretty cool stuff!

This is probably the best Hughes story....

While running day-to-day business operations, they also took great pains to follow Hughes' every bizarre whim. For example, Hughes took a liking to Baskin Robbins' banana-nut ice cream, and his aides were horror-stricken when they learned that Baskin-Robbins had eliminated the flavor. They made a special order of 350 gallons—the smallest amount the company could provide for a special order—and had it shipped from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. A few days after the order arrived, Hughes announced he'd tired of banana-nut and only wanted vanilla ice cream. For years afterwards, Hughes' aides gave free gallons of banana-nut ice cream to their friends and family.
