My grades are in

A few weeks back i decided to join Pcgs so i could have a few coins graded. I really wanted my 3 legged buffalo graded but also had to send in 4 others. 2 I got from my grandfather (Morgan Dollars) and 3 (actually 4, from dealers)

the grades and what i thought they were:

3 legged bought as an au/bu coin from gobrecth numismatics for 400.00 .......................AU55

1893 isabella 25 cent......................damaged/tooling I bought this from a dealer (i forget who) I thought it was an AU coin

1878 CC I thought it was a 60/63 coin.............Pcgs 63 bought from a dealer (i forget who)

1880.....the one where I thought was an AU58..............MS62

1893CC I thought was a VG coin .........Fine 12

add these grades to the 1914/3 centles cleaned POS and I am disheartned that 50 % of the'dealer' coins had problems.

My grandfather, I thought was a hoarder but the other day reading the new york subway hoard it dawned on me that he too collected by year and not mint mark. he had all different dates and only had mint marks if it was given to him. I know this because I gave my sister one of each date, all my cousins got different dates too. It just never dawned on me that he would do that or even know to do that. he got them from the local banks.

edited to add: I sent the coins on Dec 27, they were logged in on Jan 4th amd shipped Jan 16th. I paid for 'regular' service. fast IMO.

stuff like this really takes the fun out of the hobby. At least you got a couple coins that graded better than you thought. I guess most don't realize that this hobby is really a business in all aspects and it kind of loses it appeal when you realize this.

It is not the business aspect that hurts the hobby, it is those that run business in a crooked manner.

    BINGO!

There will be a dwindling number of NEW Classic Collectors unless the old Classic Collectors get proactive NOW.

There is a (costly-per coin) due-diligence/verification premium that is unspoken, but will be DEMANDED by any (serious) new Classic Collector in the future.

Darktone, I don't understand your reaction. Virtually all of his coins came in at, or higher than, what he expected. He just made $1,000 on the 3-legger alone. Would you be unhappy with these submissions results?image

I think the problem discussed here is that there are dealers who advertise coins as a certain grade and also advertise them as problem free, but when the test comes around, it turns out those coins do in fact have problems. I do not think the OP should have any problem with the Gorbrecht coin as it was advertised as AU/BU and it graded AU. However, if the coin was priced at BU, then Gorbrecht should be ashamed.

WinPitcher, when was the 3-legged Buffy purchased?

I purchased the gobreghtt coin (the 3 legged) in 1994. it was advertised as au/bu for 395.00.............I have no problem with them.

my problem is with centsles selling me a cleaned coin and the isabella coin. When I purchased the centsles coin I specifically asked if it had been cleaned, his reply? NO and he went on saying how it was a nice coin.

and yes for some of us it is disheartening to ask all the right questions and just be blatantly lied too.

Yeah, I did not think you had a problem with Gorbrecht as the coin graded as was advertised. I do not even know if they still advertsise in the coin mags anymore. I bought from them in 1996 I think. I bought ten coins and all graded exactly as the said it would. And, those coins were graded by PCGS back then.

Sadly, many sellers on eBay sell raw coins as problem free and they are not. That is why buyers beware should always apply. If the pictures suck, I will most likely not bid. If I do bid, it is a cheapy bid and if I win, fine. I recently bought a coin anbd the picture makes the coin look superb. Can't wait to get it and see how it looks in real life. I will post scans when I get it.

I must add to my post and say that not every coin dealer is a bad apple and many will disclose problems, such as cleanings and coins that were whizzed upon. You just have to weed out the bad.

Good luck on your future collection. It is a fun hobby, even with the bad apples. Look at this coin as a tuition coin. You learned a lesson from it. Use the knowledge you gained from this experience to buy coins in the future. I've had the same lesson before, but my coin was probably not as expensive as your Isabella. My coin cost me $125. When I got it, it was obviously cleaned. I think it was a different coin than pictured, but I put it on eBay with the noted problems and only took a 10-dollar loss after eBay fees.
