Decided to bit the bullet and pick one up. Haven't rec'd it yet. These are the sellers photos. What do you think? Grade opinions are welcome. I'll probably send it to PCGS for grading.

Absolutely beautiful. One of the nicest I have seen.

I would guess MS65. It seems real clean except for that rather deep ding on the eagles wing.

Wait, I just noticed the bag marks in the reverse lettering. That may very well bring it down to MS64.

Great looking coin. I've bought about a half dozen coins from rpholder on ebay, all nice raw and toned (seeminly risky) and never been let down. All have gone right into top tier holders, generally at the grade promised... my icon is an rpholder coin that I bought at an MS64 price and it came back an MS64. on a 1928D buff, that's a big spread in my favor! I bet you'll be pleased.

I see swirls on the coin. Look like a possible whizzing or surface alteration, and then toned on top of that.

Edited to add: Oops....I see you bought it raw. Nice but I agree with some other questions on it that have been posted here, esp. the toning.

Reverse looks a little dinged up, works for me as a 64.

i dont think the swirls are whizzing or alteration. Many early commems have fields that look like that. Its either die polish lines or just how the field is prepared.

It kinda reminds me of the fied in this Wisconsin commem I own. I dont intend to hijack the thread or detract from the beautiful conn. commem but here is what im talkning about:

It's raw but at the grades being proposed here I bought it low enough to take a chance. The seller is indeed rpholder as someone suggested and we talked about the grade and he said 64 at PCGS. I'll be very happy with that but I also won't be disappointed if it is a point less. --Jerry

I have purchased coins from that seller in the past. I have found him to be very pleasant to deal with, but his grading and photography are often optimistic. He does typically take returns, so if you do not like it, you can return it. This is a nifty looking example of one of my favorite designs. Enjoy!

He doesn't holder many of his coins. I thought about that and did a history search here before I bought it and found comments similar to those in this thread which made me comfortable buying from him. I have to admit that this if the first coin I've ever bought that toning figured into my decision. You can even find historical statements I've made here to the effect of "I don't do toned coins"...certainly I'll have to reconsider my position now as I really like this coin.

I was just speaking without any knowlege of the seller, I did not imply that it is AT, it is just that I CAN'T tell either way, but either way it looks very nice, and in the end that is all it matters, a happy seller and a happly buyer, who really cares if it is AT or NT if one can not tell the difference anyways.

I thought you only like coins from the 1700's and 2000's.

Let's go to the source-- what does the QDB Commemorative Encyclopedia say? I was just looking at it last night to brush up on the Pilgrim commemorative, and he mentioned about raised die polish lines (and how they are mistaken for whizzing/cleaning). I wonder what it says specifically about the CT commemorative.

The swirl lines are die polish and are on all Connecticut half dollars. However, you have apparent horizontal slide mark hairlines on both obverse and reverse. Across the obverse on the tree trunk over the hollow and on the reverse on the top of the eagle's left leg. I had noticed this coin previously on ebay and had noticed those apparent hairlines immediately.

Tom, Your monitor seem to have better resolution than mine. I can't see them. But I'll have the coin in hand soon and will be able to look. Indeed the seller has a liberal return policy. As I posted earlier, I'll be happy with a 63 but I won't be happy with a BB. --Jerry

Some of the colors atop the eagle seem a little bit off to me. I am inclined from the pic to at least wonder whether this is a retoned "hsturn" job. Good deal, if it's real. Return if it's not.
