That auction amounts to a lottery which is illegal on eBay. However, I doubt if anyone will see the Anniversary set. It's beyond me why they allow it except for $ greed.
Hard to understand. Actually this auction is against eBay rules and is not allowed. Dutch auctions must all contain the same duplicate items. He cannot add bonuses to some lots as he sees fit. However if noone turns him in it will continue.
"eBay does not permit listings that promote giveaways, random drawings, raffles, or prizes, because these promotions are highly regulated and may be unlawful in many states. eBay itself may run such promotions on the site, and may grant authorization to its partners or third party companies to run promotions that comply with applicable laws.
eBay does not permit bonus listings in which the seller does not state the exact amount at which the bonus will apply, or Multiple Item Listings in which the exact same bonus is not offered to all buyers."
This listing is even worse-- Link .. Since only the winner or the auction can leave feedback-How do you know if the winners of the bid amts actually get the bonuses?
I ran across the same listing, and was hoping it was an error, with the BIN. Very misleading, and to much to read. I doubt anyone will receive the ASE set, it's mentioned to hook the fools.
ebay is an avenue by which a schemer with a good scam can operate. I have to give the seller credit for using his mind in such a way as to make money, And technically not cheat anyone out of theirs.
A lot of times I've lost roofing bids to competitors it is how business works. One time, a call for a leak repair came in to the office. I went to check and realized it was a home I previously bid for a roof but had lost to a competitor. My competitor roofed the house without UNDERLAYMENT or what we call BASE FELT PAPER.
Guess what really roofs a house and keeps it dry ? You guessed it... the underlayment. It is a minimal cost of the material needed for a roof but the most critical. READ BEFORE YOU PURCHASE and if you are one who bid on this auction, retract your bid rather than throw away money. If anyone wants to just throw money away, my PAY POW™ I.D. is : knowmale@hotmail.com
Send me 5 dollars and I'll send you a silver and a copper coin. Laura doesn't want these widgets
and if you are the 200,000 thousandth donor, I'll send you a $100 2006W Platinum unc Coin (the 3 branches of govt. coin, not statue of liberty).
<< <i>Never mind it's a power seller, totally legit, I'm such an idiot. >>
Hey, I'm a powerseller. It was a total accident for me. I sold over a thousand dollars worth of collectible coins in one month.... then another month, .. then another month and voila, there is your power seller status .
But here is the catch in this auction:
Here are the details for the auction.
I will be selling 100, Pre 1964 US coins. All coins will be from an estate collection which includes Silver Roosevelt Dimes, Mercury Dimes, Washington Quarters, Standing Liberties, Wheat, and Indian Pennies, V and Buffalo Nickels, Liberty Dollars etc..
You are bidding on one of these coins, shipped to your door step and here is what you really want:
Attached to one of the 100 coins mentioned above is A: The 20th anniversary silver. My deal is better
Just report it to Ebay. Do you realize how many auctions Ebay has going at any one time and how many scammers and crooks are out there? I think Ebay does the best they can given the tens of thousands of cheats out there.
All items will be shipped once the 100 coins are sold. If not all 100 coins are sold we reserve the right to refund 100% of the purchase price and shipping to the buyer.
if he has sold 82 so far I would say ebay has looked at it and decided it is within the rules. You guys who don't think he is going to give away the set have an innate distrust of all other humans. He is selling he set and some cheap quarters for over $600, why shouldn't he ship it?

he has 'sold' 82 thus far.

I'm sure one of his/her counterparts will come in an say "What the heck, I'll buy up the rest of these just to keep the auction going" reguardless how many are sold/left at the end.
I wouldn't touch it with someone elses money never you mind mine.
How about the real reason? The fact that IT'S NOT A SCAM as long as he does just exactly what he says he will!
Does a prospective bidder need to actually READ THE AUCTION DISCRIPTION (wow, what a concept! Someone actually taking on a little personal responability) before bidding? Sure, he does. But, just like most of the ebay "scams" that people complain about on this forum this one isn't a scam.
This is not to say that the auction appears to be against ebay policies concerning dutch auctions and therefore should be cancelled, however.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I was going to say, "And the phone company should keep scammers from calling me on the phone" but ebay does look at auctions, especially after they are reported. They don't have staff numismatists so fake coins are sometimes difficult for them. But they do know their rules and if this one violated them, I don't think it would survive. I'm not going to bid on it, clearly lots of other posters aren't going to bid on it. but some guys like lotteries and bought 10 tickets each on this one.
I have a question for the skeptics. When someone comes through your office with a football pool to you call them a scammer and suggest that nobody will ever see the top prise?

Even shipping the ASE set legitimately will provide vast profits.
But prize/chance/consideration equals a lottery, which, AFAIK, is illegal everywhere if not run by the state.
Look at all the people who bought multiples, and all the bidders who came back for more...I've been overestimating the average eBayer's brainpower.
Forget the junk quarters or silver dimes....this guy is going with wheat cents, or my name isn't jmski52.
I knew it would happen.
