For this Special, we're looking for coins with which Julius Caesar would have felt right at home -- U.S. coins that bear Roman Numerals.
Collectors Club Members may submit one coin from any of the following categories for free grading:
Three Cent Nickel 1865-1889, Roman numeral III on the reverse
Liberty Head Nickel 1883-1913, with the famous Roman numeral V on the back
1907 St. Gaudens "High Relief" $20, the only coin of the type with a Roman numeral date
***********************************************************************
This special is valid for all current Collectors Club members. One coin per member within this quarter.
The coin must be submitted on its own submission form with its own return shipping.
The coins listed above are the only coins valid for this special.
Please contact customer service if you have any additional questions.
Thanks,
Carol
PS. This will be posted on the site as well.

<< <i>what about American gold eagles?
They have roman numerals on the 86-91 years >>
This is why I enclosed the line -The coins listed above are the only coins valid for this special.
sorry
kind of a rarified quarterly special. I liked the last quarter's special better.

Since the announced theme was "U.S. coins that bear Roman Numerals", it sounds like PCGS is making an editorial comment that GAEs aren't coins.

I think it has more to do with the fact that those coins would go to the modern graders and the other coins listed would not. The modern guys got the last batch of freebies.

I figured as much. I'm just stirring the pot.

<< <i>Does this apply to crossovers or does it have to be a raw piece? >>
Crossovers are fine. So are regrades.

Or for the April 1st Special?
<< <i>This is why I enclosed the line -The coins listed above are the only coins valid for this special. >>
So there is the difference between "US COINS and US BULLION"
From other threads I've read, I sense there are many people who do not understand this difference, especially many NEW people who hear about Gold and Silver and start speculating by purchasing AGE/ASE bullion. Sure it's backed by the governement...it's made by them. But, it's following the metals market , not the collectibles market, per se.
I have friends who'd rather spend money on bullion to hedge inflation than to buy a gold coin from a dealer because that ounce is a "hundred dollars more than SPOT"
Is this falling on blind eyes or deaf ears ? Tell me to shuddup if I'm outta line.

<< <i>Do you think TDN is going to use the quarterly special to try to upgrade the 1913 Liberty nickel? >>
Claychaser thinks that might be a good idea.

<< <i>Hey, I know. You can bug … I mean make suggestions to Ron with ideas for the next on starting June!
Or for the April 1st Special? >>
Yes but I would suggest serious requests only (not funny April Fool’s ones) and starting a thread late February to mid March, anything earlier is bound to be lost or forgotten.
<< <i>Only the 3 cent nickel not the 3 cent silver with the Roman numeral on back? >>
Correct

<< <i>Only the 3 cent nickel not the 3 cent silver with the Roman numeral on back? >>
Correct >>
Then the assertion that Caesar would be right at home with these coins is false, since nickel wasn't discovered until MDCCLI.

Nerd alert!
<< <i>With a current population of 4219, it should be interesting to see how many more high relief Saints are graded at the end of the quarter. >>
I can't imagine that a $50 freebie would be the impetus for getting around to slabbing a $20,000 coin.

It's nice to see some folks appeal to the obvious at times.
