1987 Topps vending box

I was at Wal-mart last night and saw a box of 1987 Topps baseball 500ct. box. they were selling it for 20 bucks. I didn't get it, but was wondering what your thoughts were on it. Is it worth going back and picking up?

Thanks

    Not worth it.

Baseball Card Exchange sells these things for $8 each.

    Thanks,

I didn't think it was a very good deal, but I've never seen that at Wal-Mart before so it kind of had me double thinking it.

I was at a Walmart a few months ago when I was a bit surprised by what I found..

    Besides all the usual stuff..

    1989 Upper Deck packs
    1988 Donruss wax box
    1987 Donruss wax box
    several 1988 Topps traded sets

Curious, I guess Walmart's suppliers still have this stuff in stock.

You can get ALL of these for about that same price:

    1987 Topps Factory set $16
    1987 Topps Traded set $5
1987 Topps wax pack 50 cents
    1987 Topps cello pack $1
    1987 Topps rack pack $1

1987 Topps wax carton $14 Still dirt cheap after 20 years!

Or if you REALLY want to treat yourself, why not go with the Cadillac of 1987 Topps for just $80?

  • I don't know what retail is for these but I was getting cases of them for about $110 a couple years back. Sold them for $10 each--they sold well. I think $20 is too high, since you can get either a factory set for the same price, or an unopened rack box, or a PSA 9 bonds and McGwire for that much.

Even Target - on occasion has some "dump junk" for sale.

On the distribution to Walmart and Target.

I know that the Treat Entertainment Corp of Florence Alabama had the contract to supply Walmart. I don't know who currently holds it. They were responsible for the famous T206 Wagner PSA 8 card deal a few years back.

But, I do know that the exclusive supplier of cards to Target is the Excel Corporation. I see the local distributor at my store from time to time and talk for a bit.

So, that's some pretty big buying capability when one is talking about a few thousand stores.
