Experience canceling Credit Card/Paypal purchase for non-shipment?

On an adjacent thread, I noticed several people stating that if the buyer paid by credit card and then cancels the Credit Card payment because of non-shipment that everything will be OK. Here what happened to me about a year ago.

I bought a laptop on ebay, paid thru paypal with a credit card. Three days later I received an email from ebay saying that the seller was fraudulent and advising me to cancel my payment if I had paid via credit card. So I did, and sent paypal a copy of the ebay letter.

About 1 week later, I get an email from paypal that my account was being suspended because of the chargeback. Evidently paypal had already given the money to the “seller” and couldn’t get it back.

I went thru hell getting my account re-instated. Finally I had to place a small charge on another credit card, wait for the charge amount to show up on my credit card statement, then send the transaction code to paypal, wait for a letter VIA SNAILMAIL from paypal with another confirmation code, and then enter this additional confirmation code with paypal.

What a hassle! And my paypal account was shut down for 3 weeks (I had to explain this to several people waiting payment). All because I followed THEIR instructions in stopping payment on the credit card.

eBay aint Paypal, but you should have sent the eBay advice notice to PP and let them duke it out.

I think anytime you use a CC to get your dough back and bypass paypal that happens Bill.

Well, I suspect they meant that if you paid DIRECTLY via credit card, not through PayPal. They probably expected you to follow the usual PayPal/eBay dispute resolution process when you use PayPal.

Still now that eBay owns PayPal, I suspect that armed with a copy of eBay's note to you, and a history of being a good-faith member, this can and will be reversed. It sucks, and it may take some time to sort out, but it sounds like an honest misunderstanding. Kinda sucks that they shoot first and ask questions later, though.

I've had to reverse two credit card charges I made via paypal. The first was an expensive camera lens. The seller clamed the lens was in excellent condition with no scratches or cleaning marks anywhere. When I received it there was a large (about 15mm) scratch on the front element. I called the seller immediately I told him I would be returning the lens and why. His response was he did not accept returns and would not return my money. I contacted paypal told them the problem and thier response was that I needed to work something out with the seller.

I then contacted my credit card company and filed a dispute. They told me to get a second opinion from a dealer or repair shop and send them a letter I did and they reversed the charge. I got a nasty gram from paypal two days later saying were considering suspending my account because I did not follow their procedures. I emailed copies of the correspondence between myself, the seller, the credit card company, and camera dealer and I never heard another word from paypal about the incident.

A week later I got a nasty gram from the seller. He was going to report me to the police, take me to court, and come kick my ass. He said I had his lens and his money - in fact I had sent the lens back priority mail with a confirmation before the charge was reversed, and his wife had signed the slip. Shorty after that I saw he had listed the lens again - in excellent condition with no scratches - and would only accept a money order - no paypal, and no checks.

The second incident was over a coin that had a seven day return. It was raw and listed as a proof 65. I didn't expect a 65, but I did expect a proof. What I received was circulated business strike. I emailed the seller within 15 minutes of opening the package and told them I was returning the coin. They responded "no problem" we will refund your money. Two weeks after I received confirmation they had received the coin I emailed asking when I could expect a refund, They responded "any day now" after two more weeks I asked again and their response was "any day ". I asked one more time after 8 weeks and they replied they were sorry, but they had been very busy and just had not gotten around to making the refund.

At that point I contacted my credit card company and sent them copies of the emails and they reversed the charges that day. Again I got a nasty gram from paypal saying I had been a bad boy for not following their procedures and I was subject to having my account canceled. I sent them copies of the emails and never heard another word.

Sorry this is so long, but this topic is one of my hot buttons.

I once almost got taken on a set of DVDs I got on eBay via Buy it Now. About 3 minutes after I paid on PayPal with my CC, I went back to see the transaction on My eBay. No transaction was there. I did a little tracking down and discovered the auction had been pulled almost exactly when I was paying because the acct was hijacked. I went into PayPal and the payment had not yet been claimed, so I cancelled the payment and the problem went away. I was worried for a little while, though.

I will have a good test case coming up on exactly your concern about paypal.

I ordered $2500 worth of coins and I have not received them. I disputed the transaction through paypal since ebay indicated the seller was no longer a authorized ebayer. Paypal took my dispute in and the seller did not respond.

Paypal said my dispute was accepted however they allowed the seller to drain his account of all but $175 thereby refunding me only $175 of my charges so far. Paypal then "closed out" my case stating that everything is now fine and that they will continue to try to get me more funds when the opportunity presents itself.

    What a joke.

Now, I have to wait 30 days after the transaction date to "dispute/protest" the charge on my credit card. I intend to and paypal had a chance to protect its interest as well as mine by freezing the sellers funds when I warned paypal of ebay expulsion of the seller.

i will have plenty of opportunities to remind paypal of their stupidity and what I plan to do by email and internal correspondence.

    I will keep you informed.

I'm not sure I would have bothered. I've been using paypal as little as possible.

Paypal can get their payments back!
I had an idiot buyer (a fellow Forum member) to request their money back through Paypal due to a slow USPS shipment. Paypal went into my checking account and got their money and "put it on hold." The coins finally showed up and I got to keep my money. I couldn't believe they just took the money out of my checking account like that! Kind of scarry!

Paypal is a one way street, their way and to their benefit. It's for that reason that I have a personal account and refuse to pay them a cent. I had one bad experience and never again. image

The way to prevent that is to set up a bank account for use only with paypal. I opened my paypal account using my personal bank account then later opened an account strictly for use with paypal transactions. I always use a credit card to pay for items because that gives an extra layer of protection against fraud. When I transfer money out of paypal it goes first to the dedicated paypal account which normally has a zero balance, then to my regular account. Paypal cannot access my personal account. I just don't trust them or their privacy and data protection procedures.
