A mistake? Only time will tell. Here is my justification:
a) The 2006-W Gold Uncirculated 1/2 Ounce is believed to have a mintage three to four times larger than the mintage of the 1 ounce plat coins. Yet the collector base is perhaps ten times as large.
b) Fully 25-30% of the 1 ounce plat coins are in "soft" hands: they were bought by forum members as "quick flips" or "long term investments." Either way, they were bought with the intent to sell. The gold coins were hyped far less, so it is reasonable to expect that most are in more solid hands.
c) The gold 1/2 ounce is far more liquid than the platinum one ounce (at issue price, $375 versus $1390).
The only potential downside I see is that the 2006-W plats may get a good boost from being the first in a three year series. In the end, only time will tell. In the meantime, my credit card bill will be paid off, so I'm happy!
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."
I have been the big seller of the sealed sets, my very last one for sale is up on the bay. I have been noticing that the auctions are slimming down. Only 14 or so right now vs more than 30 at one point. I sold at least 10 $100 plats sealed. I pulled my BIN down for $2250 and now I am getting emails from a bunch of folks that did not jump on it. The quick flip supply is drying up. Watch the next month, these are going to start hitting new highs. I was selling because I had to use an ultra high interest CC on 13 of them and wanted to just pay that sucka off. The rest that I purchased with good old cash are going to PCGS.
...so that I can keep my 2006-W Uncirculated Gold 1/2 ouncers >>
I feel this is a good process... You purchased the Plats and gold... Sold the Plats and now have a free piece of gold... Sounds like a win situation to me... Max profit is a crap shoot mutch the same way stocks are... sure if you hold out the longer you wait the more you could make, but like everything else in life this has risk...
+.01 is profit, enough to afford a 1/2 oz of gold is pretty damn good profit any day of the week
