Coin Photographers_ Nikon vs Canon

About to make the move to a DSLR and would like to get some opinions regarding Nikon or Canon.

My search has been narrowed down to the following:

Nikon D80

or

Canon Eos30D

I've heard that Canon's operate better in low light whereas the Nikon glass can't be beat.

Any one have any coin photography experience with the cameras I'm considering?

A friend of mine who is a stills photographer for Film/TV says cameras are now nothing but glass and a computer chip. Go with the glass. Lack of light won't be an issue for you.

I have been using a Nikon D100 for the past 2.5 years, after using a Nikon film SLR for the past 25 years. Over 16,000 pictures taken without a hitch! I love the camera, you couldn't go wrong with the Nikon. As a matter of interest, I am still using the 105mm micro nikkor lens I was shooting back in dental school in the early 80's. I bought it used, and it still gives great pictures to this day. All my lenses (pre digital) are still used with the D100, only in manual mode. I use a ring flash, and occasionally a extension tube for ultra close-ups. I'll attach a few pictures for your evaluation.

They are both good, you are unlikely to be disappointed by either, although you may disappoint RUss if you go with Canon. I prefer Nikon just because that's what I know. Glass does make a definite difference, but you won't see most of that until you go to max size.

I've been an amateur photography for over 30 years. Started out with minolta and moved to Nikon several years ago. The Nikon glass is far superior, no question about that. When choosing a camera, I have learned that you spend as much as you can afford on the camera lens and not on the camera body, be it digital or film. IMHO.

Outstanding insight. The glass is the eye, capturing the natural beauty and the flaws. The Nikon glass has a superior reputation.

Sure you can buy the camera, but can you afford the glass. For both the Nikon and Canon, a nice lense will cost you in the 1k's. My preference is canon, but to each their own.

I don't like Nikon because the uncorrected color has never been right on my point and shoot and the autofocus on the point and shoot doesn't focus on the moving kids as fast or as well giving me blurry kidpics.

The latter doesn't apply to coins and custom white balance is required to get good pics with either. So I went with Canon because I'm a canon fan but Mgoodm3 uses nikon and his photos are as good as it gets...of course now you're talking talent rather than equipent. You think if I traded golf clubs with Tiger Woods I could beat him?

Here's one of my recent shots with the Canon DSLR:

Get what you feel most comfortable with not what other feel comfortable with.

I have a Nikon (I just got it), but I chose my Nikon because of all my years using 35MM film cameras. It is what works for me. You may find a Canon works better for your needs. Test them both and then make your choice. My guess is the biggest issue you will have is trying to figure out the lighting. It should be about the same for both. Also consider what else you do with the camera. Photography is another hobby of mine, and I didn't get the Nikon for coin photography, I got the Nikon for my all around use.

Good luck with whichever way you go.

Now post 'em when you get one.

I've switched over to the Canon 20D (basically the same camera as the 30D). I love it for sports photography. It will shoot a six to nine frame burst at 8 mpixels and five frames a second.
Canon's ultrasonic lens is the fastest in the industry for al servo focusing. As far as coin photography and macro photography, I feel that it's a draw. If your going to include action photography as well as macro photography... Canon wins hands down.

That actually is the best image I have ever seen of that eyesore of a coin... all Kennedy halves should be imaged in this manner as well. For the good of the hobby.

I struggled this summer with the Nikon D200 vs. Canon 30D decision, finally deciding on the Nikon. I flat-out love it!

There are two things I would not want to do without -- the Nikon micro/macro lens (I have the 60mm but I am told the 105mm is even better), and the white balance adjustment setting button/wheel. If the D80 doesn't have it, you don't know what you're missing.

Both the Nikon and Canon are fabulous machines, but I think the specialized macro lens and the white balance adjustment control are vital to your ease and enjoyment of shooting coins.
    When in doubt, don't.

jpeg is a Nikon file extension? And all this time, I thought it was a graphics extension that has nothing to do with camera brand.

No offence to either LucyBop or Russ, but I think it is more about the set up than the physical camera.

(Nikon is better, it just might not be better for your needs or situation.)
