NGC changes "First Strikes" to "Early Releases" designation

Front page of Jan 1, 2007 issue of Coin World says that NGC will no longer label bullion coins as "FIRST STRIKES". A new designation, "EARLY RELEASES" replaces it. Seems to me that label was suggested on this very board. Why didn't you register the trademark? Now NGC can claim it.

This obviously is reaction to the lawsuit against NGC in Florida (and PCGS in California). Nothing in the story indicates any change or changes for PCGS.

My question is this: Why would an "EARLY RELEASES" coin be more valuable than a later release. Are collectors going to go crazy getting their coins in by the deadline to get the new label? Early Releases is just as much as gimmick as First Strikes. Why bother with it at all? If bulk submitters stopped paying for the label to sell to ignorant buyers, this whole scheme would die in a heart beat.

ADDENDUM: The article states that NGC will leave the "FIRST STRIKES" in the coin census and there will be no retrolabelling of existing slabs.
