1921 D Morgan die crack??

I was looking over this Morgan I had and reviewing those VAMs listed in Vamworld, but could not tie it to a particular type. Is this crack common, or is it even a die crack. Thanks for any input.

    Ray,

I couldn't ID the VAM, but the portion going from the A into the M and then onto the rim is certainly a die crack. The crack appears to run across the eagle's wing and into TRUST, but it might be a scratch at that point. Hard to say.

  • Thanks... It in fact runs into trust and through ust in trust, but is not a scratch, just poor photograhy and lighting

In order to be considered a separate VAM, the crack would have to be wide enough to be considered a break (missing chunks of die). If a later die state does show a die break, then this would be an early die state of that VAM.

    Thanks John....

Guess I'll just have to play the waiting game on this. It does have 2 others on the reverse. One goes across the top of the A from T to T in STATES, and the second across the top of NITED and into the dentil.

Just cracks. Technically a VAM-1. If someone someday seriously decides to try to catalogue the actual dies used in the production of these dollars and their progressions, a coin like this would be very useful since it does have distinctive cracks on the reverse that apparently led to no terminal state that was deemed mentionable by George and Leroy.
