Sending ASE for grading question

I recieved one of my ASE sets the other day. I picked up the box and I heard something rattling around inside, so I opened it. All 3 of the capsules had popped out of their pockets and were moving around, thankfully the coins were still in the capsules.

I just read the directions from NGC and PCGS...and they say that the coins must be in the original mailing BOX. So now I cant get 20th anniversary designation on these? Even on the Reverse Proof?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Without the 20th anniv on the insert the other 2 may not be worth grading.

I have 2 orders on the way.One is for 8 sets and the other is for 9 sets.Would it be worth while to send in for the grades or keep them sealed and sell on the bay?

I sent mine in to be graded.

I sent mine in for grading after opening and on the description line of the form I put 20th anniv. for all coins and I received the 20th anniv labels even with the packages being opened. I sent in 2 opened boxed and received all 69;s and one RP PR70

Look at it this way, you have what many do not AND you paid mint cost for them.

If you had really wanted the PCGS 20th Anniversary Label, you would not have opened the package but just sent it in like the rest of us and hoped for the best.

My advice to you is examine what you have and if you really want that 20th Anniversary Label on the Reverse proof then send it in, otherwise just be glad you didn't pay $175 - $225 for the same ungraded set.

If you really feel lucky, try John91C's approach and hope for the best. I have heard this has happened before and all it'll cost you is shipping both ways and $14 per coin.

IF you get a PR70DCAM on the proof, it is worth grading.
The MS would still be worth grading since that is just over 500,000 minted anyway. It will go up and be like the 1996 SAE.....worth good $ raw but worth a bit more graded.

I looked at the reverse proof under 15x magnification. There are no milk spots on it (or on any others), and I do not see any nicks at all. Frankly, I think it has a very good chance at grading a 70. I have 3 more sets on the way.

But you know what it is...if I hear something rattling around the box, I am going to open it. What if like the SF commems the coin popped out and is floating around? More damage will happen when sending to the grading company no?

ah decisions decisions...

Ankur, you can still get the 20th anniversary designation on your coins. Just make sure you send them in the set box they arrived in with a notation on your submission form for 20th anniversary designation. Also, make sure you tell them to send your empty set box back. You might want to sell the empty box in the future. They will charge an extra $2 to return your empty set box. I sent a set in that I had cherry picked from 4 sets and got the 20th anniversary designation on all three coins. The reverse proof graded a 70, while the other two in the set graded a 69. Good luck on your grades.
