Chase Mastercard and the US Mint, I am SO Mad

I placed an order about a week ago for -5- of the Platinum W 1 oz. unc. coins and -3- of the 4-coin Platinum W sets on my Chase card with a credit limit far exceeding the charges made.

I check today on the -5- coin order and it says "on hold" so I call the mint and they say they tried to run the card through twice on the 19th and the 21st and it was declined both times so I am now on some "cancellation holding" status or whatever and to contact my financial institution to see why the charge was declined.

So I call Chase and they tell me they DID decline the charge TWICE because of their consumer fraud protection and they did not even give me a call to let me know or anything, and I've had 3 previous charges in the past month on that card with the mint too.

So I call the mint back and tell them that Chase will now honor the charge and just to run it through again and they tell me it now takes 2-3 weeks and must go to a different dept. and there is also no guaranty they will fill my order now. And had I not called today just by chance, Chase would have also declined the charge when they tried to run the order for the 4-coin Plat. sets too.

I am so mad at Chase Mastercard I will cancel that card after all this, they should've called me after declining it and especially the 2nd time. image

No, they should have accepted the charge the first time and if they were at all worried they should have then called you to confirm it was legit.

I sure hope you're right. I could've strangled that guy on the phone at Chase mastercard, especially since they could've seen I've just previously charged stuff with the mint last month.

Do not cancel the order. Same thing happened to me with the GAE and I did received a week ago.

Capital One does the same thing. You'll find out about it only if you call, and usually a week or so later you'll get the nice letter stating your account has been locked due to some suspicous purchasing.
    Prost!

My wife had that card and got rid of it. It seemed like Chase expects you to call them in advance for any charge out of the ordinary. What a hassle.

The kicker in this whole thing is this "protection" is not for you the only one protected is them.
If you dispute the charge because it is a false one the credit card company takes the hit not you.
So the only one being protected is them.

I believe you can also set up an email warning for any transactions on your account that are refused or over a certain amount.
I will have to check my account email preferences.

    Maybe smoeone else knows more?

I heard about complaints with Chase from this board, so I don't use it. I didn't know about Capital One. Hope you get your coins that never should have been taken away.

I had a similar problem with Chase just last month. After 15 years with Chase, I now use a different card as my primary.

BTW, Amex seems to be the best for large charges.

I wouldn't touch Chase or CapitalOne with a ten foot pole.

I almost wish I had the Chase or Capital One cards now. Citibank processed two fraudulent balance transfers to an American Express card and a Macy's card to the tune of $12,000. The name on the other accounts didn't even match. I only caught it because the sent me an email to let me know the transfers had been successfully completed. Had to cancel the card and wait for a new one right before finishing Christmas shopping. Luckily, they let my ASE order from the mint go through AFTER the card was cancelled.

I don't see any legitimate reason why there would be fraud worries when the goods are being shipped to the billing address of the card, especially if the card holder has done business with the vendor in the past without any problems.

I just checked my email preferences on my cards and I guess I was mistaken about the email notifications. There should be some notification of all transactions even those refused.

Strange, my wife has a Chase card and has never had a problem. I use a Bank of America Visa card and they routinely process large Mint purchases without question.

I also have a Chase Visa and they screw me over in the same way at every possible turn. I lost $1,000 in would-be profit on the Ben Franklins because the dimwits didn't authorize the charge.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

I own one and only one credit card, B of A, and they have never denied a charge. They have also never questioned one, but I have also only had one charge of like $40 put on my card incorrectly, and that was done by a new waiter on accident. Overall, B of A credit cards seem to be very reliable, although the bank itself is a bit too big for itself.

I did the same thing but I called all my credit card companies ahead of time to assure them I was going to be making the charges. They don't give a rat about protecting you its them on the hook so they are going to do what is in their best interest. Make sure you just keep them informed. I was able to put through some big CC purchases without a problem

I've had problems with Chase before on large purchases like cameras and laptops. I was expecting Chase to decline some, if not all, of my many recent plat eagle purchases. Surprisingly Chase let them all through without a peep. I have no clue what causes their fraud protection to kick-in.

I did the exact same thing, but I learned the hard way by having either the MINT or the CC cancel my max. GAE order back in August.

I went through the same with the AGEs. Saw my order on hold and learned through the boards what that meant. After calls to the Mint, USAA, and the Mint again I was good to go.

This time, I am nervous as my CC began showing pending authorizations. All the ordered in stock and reserved showed as pending. Then day by day they have disappeared, but not shown on the billed part (yet). Since the mint does not say on hold I think I am OK.....

Earlier this year, Chase took over the Visa card I'd used for years. Just prior to going to Europe in October, I phoned Chase/Visa twice to notify them of the dates of my trip and the cities where I'd be using my credit card. On the first day in Rome, Chase/Visa put a hold on my card when I tried to use it. Fortunately, I have a MasterCard with another company, and was able to use that for the following two weeks in Europe. When I returned home, there was a letter waiting from Chase's fraud division claiming they tried to call me to verify my use of the card. Bah-lone-ee.... While overseas all my phone calls were forwarded to a global cell phone I carried with me, and there were no calls or messages from Chase/Visa.

I've been exchanging letters with Chase/Visa credit card division Executive VPs for several weeks now.

I wouldnt do biz with those guys, they are absolutely terrible.

Citibank for me as primary, never a problem.

These mental midgets did it to me too. They canceled my order for the 1/4 oz AGE W. I put the order in before they sold out. Now they tell me om on the waiting list. How dumb can they be, they send you an email to confirm your order, they send you an email to say your order was shipped. why not send an email when there is a problem?

ALL credit card companies do it and they do NOT call you when it happens. The decision making is done by computer and is automated. It is definitely a security thing and is for your own protection. Call them if you expect to be making any larger than $1000 transactions and they will pre-clear it.

I have the same problem with my Chase Visa. A few times I've received an automated phone call asking me to verify a purchase. Then it will ask me to verify the last 5 or so purchases (even small ones). I am then instructed to contact the merchant and tell them to recharge my card. If it's an online purchase sometimes I can just recharge it myself online, sometimes I have to contact the merchant. There seems to be no consistent pattern of when this will happen and which way it gets resolved - which is annoying (although it seems to only happen when the purchase is over a $2-3k). It's like people who are against racial profiling - wasting time searching an 90 year old grandma from Sweden. The credit card company knows by now that I make large coin purchases! I should be able to monitor it myself and have the option to reject a charge without too much trouble. The US MINT is a perfect example of a situation where you don't want to have your purchase rejected as they are already so elusive about whether you have actually filled your order, etc. There is a cancel button, then that disappears - then there is a status of in stock and reserved... calling your cc company before purchases, on a regular basis is just plain inconvenient.

In any case I wasn't sure if the problem was greater at Chase but it appears that it is... the "pending charges" is a somewhat reliable indicator if the charge actually went through or not, and that can be checked immediately.

Hey - CHASE saved you a ton of money from buying those mint sets!!!image I always have these crazy big purchases on my CHASE card, and at times they call me. Annoying, BUT.... No lie - just this weekend, they called again, but guess what??? Someone was charging (using my number and the charges were declined by CHASE) for groceries, stereo equipment, etc., IN ITALY!!! Soooo, at times, they are protecting YOU, not just themselves.

No, the merchant takes the hit. This is an online transaction, not a physical card swipe. The credit card issuer is only on the hook if it's a physical card swipe.

CALL customer service ASAP!!! Ask to speak to a senior rep. They might be able to heklp you. Same thing happened to my Mastercard. And it wsa a DEBIT card. Had over $20K in it with the AGE. They DECLINED 3 sets!!! The senior rep worked it out and my order wasn't cancelled. They actually processed it through about 5-6 times before it went thru. Try it. Ray

Not the Mint's fault. Chase is a MAJOR pain in the ass. They did the same thing with my gold anniversary order, declining it because I had never charged $10K+ on it at one time even though my credit limit was $15K+. Fortunately I was able to get it switched over to another card.

I use Mastercard and Visa for gas sometimes and for restaurants that don't accept Amex or Diner's Club.
Using any Mastercard or Visa for major purchases is risky because of their "fraud controls" which defend them against frauds but are flaky at best when looked at from the standpoint of a buyer (or as a seller which my company has experienced and been damaged by).
Although Amex and Diner's Club may seem to be a bit "posh" they have no real credit limit and they do have "people" that check things like hign amount purchases etc.
Talking with a call center in India is not fun. Half the time I don't understand them and 99% of the time the people working for such "not very helpful" desks have no idea what users are talking about other than to say "terribly sorry....".
You will be better off using Amex for purchases of that magnitude. If something goes worng there will be somebody there to help you. (At least that has been my experience).

Funny thing is,turn down a coin purchase and yet I get charged $800.00 for a golf outing in the District of Columbia . DUIGUIY does not play golf ! image

American Express. Never have any problems. I didn't even bother calling them to Ok my Platinum purchase. They are used to it by now. But I did call AE when I ordered the AGE set and told them of the upcoming charge from the mint. The 1%-5% cash back is an added bonus.
