I've found nothing concrete, but the most common estimate is no more than 2,000 pieces in all grades.

And I now have 1 of them... a PO01, but a CHAIN CENT none the less.

    From the Population Reports:

    332 PCGS
    186 NGC

No telling how many of those were cracked without the tab being turned in.

Not a very good price/pop ratio.

Most have problems that keep them out of PCGS and NGC slabs so the pop reports are misleading as to actual rarity.

itsjustnotjust me, congrats on that PO01....I can guess which Board member it came from! They're just so coll when they're that smooth.......I've got one two - perhaps just slightly more worn.

Craig, It came from Tom Killian. Did he get it from you?

Yes, it did come from me. I"m looking for one with a tad more detail. Coins that are nearly completely smooth are just too hard from me to appreciate. I would like to have all my coins in AG-3 or a Full G-04 for my collection. Chain cents are super cool, but I want to be able to see SOME detail.

I don't think that the chain cents are as rare as many believe. They're highly desired as a type coin justifying the price, but there are plenty of them around if you're looking. As a previous poster wrote, most will not holder.

With a mintage of 36K, I'm guessing maybe 1,000-1500 max have survived. Tough to say. 200+ years takes a heavy toll.

Can't remember that Breen estimated, but its a pretty small number.

"Walter Breen estimated that only about 1,000 Chain cents still exist today."
