I'm thinking a $500,000 snipe should do it: LINK

In an NNC slab. How disappointing. And IMO the coin is not even close to AU. A real shame.

A '92 in plastic like that? Could this be a counterfeit? I have a hard time believing anyone would submit any 1792, regardless of condition, to NNC. There is always ANACS if the coin has problems.
  • looks like a hijacked account to me. If you look at the email address at the end of the description, and look at feedback there is a user/seller by the same handle. High-grade-coins whom is "no longer a register user".

    Looks fishy too me

Fascinating. If I recall correctly, one of these also showed up on the market in an NTC holder a while back.

I agree, even if not ANACS, NCS is a possibility.

Hmmmm. Following up on the hijacked thread note I looked at feedback. There is indeed some feedback from coin buys/sells in the past. This one stood out...

So either he was shilling his own auctions in the past (maybe that's why high-grade-coins got naru'd) or he is using a customer's ebay account for some other reason. Either explanation would probably scare off buyers for such an expensive coin.

Yes, several months ago there was a bogus 1792 half disme offered for sale on eBay, and several members of this forum helped us to identify that it was a counterfeit and get it booted before anyone got hurt. It was, if memory serves me correctly, in an NTC holder. It was easily identifiable as a Gallery Mint replica on which someone ground down the field where the word COPY had been punched, and then wore the coin down to the appearance of a well circulated grade and artificially toned it to cover the work. We were able to positively identify the counterfeit from the relationship of the eagle's wing tips to the letters on the reverse. It was removed from eBay before anyone got burned.

I cannot tell on this one if it is another modified GM replica, but others have brought up some very good points. If you had such a valuable coin, why would you submit it to a third world TPG, and not ANACS or NCS, which at least have some credibility when certifying a coin.

I sent him and email asking If I could bring a professional rep with me from a well know grading service if I win the coin. I stated I will be in Melbourne the first week of January and if he can assure me it is in fact authentic and I would be more than happy to bid if he agrees to these terms. I also stated my time is valuable and if the coin is not authenticc I would not authorize a refund on his final value fees. However I would not leave feedback either way. I did not want to sound too corny but wanted to sound serious.

His answer... We can only ship the coin at my expense but MAY allow a return at my expense

it is correct that the last time something similar to this came up it was a counterfeit 1792 half disme in an NTC holder

SGBH is auctioning a real one in January!
