You are welcome, but please don't confuse me with the Eric (ericj96) - who deserves the credit here!

  • Thanks guys........

I has been fun and will be in the future. Whatever the exact final numbers come out at --------THEY CRASHED 100 YEARS HARD! PERIOD!

    Eric
  • For those that ordered more than one coin, what are you seeing as the average quality? 69 or less?
I was looking at the population report and saw that, for example, in 1997 the majority were graded MS-68 and lower.
    Just wondering.
  • MS70s will be killer, but as for ms67, 68, and 69, I don't think it will matter all that much because the overall mintage is so VERY, VERY LOW. Did I mention it was VERY LOW?!?

  • Interestingly, it seems that we are the only ones who know about this. A quick glance across the road (really quick, I promise image ) reveals virtually no discussion of the rapidly disappearing w-unc's.

Then what are they discussing? Probably classics - that is so old.image
  • Wait until they are on e-Bay for a while. People will be screaming for them. I think it is best to wait before anyone sells any because the sky is the limit, down the road in the not too distant future.
  • Eric,

That's a noble action for Raven but may I suggest you edit that post to remove your phone number (Many of us would hate to lose your valuable information because someone identified you).

PM him instead with the info,

have been watching the coin Vault on TV. I use them to set a fair price for my E-bay Sales. I just divide there price by TWO. But they have not been selling these W Gold & Platinum? There usaully the first ones with them, Did there purchasing people screw up?

I think they are selling the regular platinums.. If they are selling the W's even with their markup if they don't know about the mintages they would be a bargain.
  • I agree with EricSan's post,

Just looking at the final numbers vs. when Ericj96 began his analysis, I think this board bought up most of the remaining 2006 Plat W-Unc run.

As of two weeks ago I came here by Google, just looking for a Coin Forum to verify the intelligence of buying a 2006 US Silver Proof Mint Set. I read, stayed and ended up buying (6) 2006 Plat W-Unc Sets (I admit, one is back-ordered) and (10) of the Plat Unc 1 oz.

What I really like is the fact that from what I can tell, most of this Forum has the common sense to realize the unique part of Mint history this run has now taken up.

I could be way off, but I doubt we will see a flood of these coins on the market vs. other the coinages.

    PS:

I can not believe my luck, this is the second Perfect Storm I stumbled into....back in June of 2003, I bought 97,000 shares of Healthsouth at .49 cents on the Pink Sheets after it crashed and then cashed out along the way before and after the 5:1 reverse split and the re-listing on the NYSE.

    PSS:

I never ended up buying that 2006 US Silver Proof Mint Set.

  • Just called about my order and the mint stated it has been pulled and ready for shipment (4-piece set). Should I open it or leave it sealed? Any benefit by leaving it sealed?
    Thanks

PCGS has changed its mind and is now offering the FS designation or the 10th Anniversary Label for the Plat W's. Not both. There is another thread on this. Its not clear whether they need to be unopened or not.

Here's what they are saying across the street about the platinum W Unc coins.

<< <i>Do these normally sell out? Was there something special about this years platinum coins? >>

While I agree we have an excessive number of threads (and I have contributed) on the subject, at least people from this forum shared what they kjnew with others and got to make informed decisions on buying these.

Hey Tbird congrats! From reading the thread across the street about all the post on the Plats here, there seems to be a few that couldn't figure that out. It sure will put some bucks in the old collection.image
  • Where is the thread that talks about PCGS instructions on the platinum submissions?image

I guess since we caught the wave and made money

we are not considered collectors ATS. I suppose a real

collector has to buy old coins and sell them at a loss, to

    be a real collector.

Those who would add their (dumb as a) post to a modern-bashing thread have dwindled in numbers lately. Perhaps some of these folks have seen the light.
  • Now I did it . I went and ordered the Gold set as well. My wife is going to freak out. I hope at least gold keeps it's bullion value.

Interesting comment. I also see that theres a good chance of platinum losing a lot of its value if manufacturers turn to another metal like palladium

After seeing these mintages I wish I bought more than just the 1/2 oz for my collection.
  • Slang, You didn't get any did you?
  • Very novice coin/paper collector but I would like to weigh in here a little bit.

I have bought four ASE sets, three ASE "W"'s, one 1/4 ounce Platinum "W", and one 1/4 ounce Gold "W".

I did this both because of the excitement of these products here on this board and because I have been involved in many (too many) hobbies over the past 35-40 years. I really never try to make money on everything I buy but I try to buy things that I think will at least hold their value. The first issue of any new series will usually be pretty good--no matter how many are made.

Another observation: In most other hobbies, the package sometimes is worth as much or more than the actual collectable. A couple of cases in point--Transformers from about twenty years ago are worth many times more with the box they came in than by themselves. Hot Wheel red lines from forty years ago also bring many times more on the original package than loose. Granted, these are toys and this does apply to mostly the toy collectors.

My point: There have been 2,000 sets of the Platinum "W" coins issued plus 5-700 each of the individual coins. The individual coin comes with a COA stating it is an Inaugural Issue. If these take off--and I'm in the corner that thinks they will--if enough people in other hobbies start to pay attention and cross over to coins they may want that piece of paper--not just the coin. Someday the whole coin collecting hobby may go that way.

    Just my FWIW.

When you send your coins in to PCGS, you must specifically ask

that all packaging, paper work and coin capsules be returned to you.

You are correct, it time a set with the origonal packaging will be more valuable.

I put my boxes in plastic bags to keep them clean and free from wear and tear.

Packaging is a strange animal. I recently sold just the sleeve to my Buff 2 coin set for around $20. it was all he wanted out of the deal. Made it easy to ship safely. He may even be a lurker, I mentioned this place as a source of info during our transaction chats.

Speaking of packing I also collect pocket watches and those little plastic Halimton cases that everyone threw away are woth at least $200 now. The rare color one's can bring twice that. If you have the watch with the orginial package that matches the S/N it make your $300 992b worth about a grand.
  • Where are these figures coming from?

I checked the mint site and I see where there is now a separate listing for Bullion sales and for Uncirculated Bullion sales but there are only figures for 2006 on the Bullion. Nothing posted for the 2006-W Uncirculated coins, at least that I can see?

  • Its funny, but I didn't get excited about the branches of Govt. thing until I read the insert that came with my set. Now I'm into it. I am going to get the next 2 for sure in at least 1 denomination and complete the run.

    edit- clarify
  • It seems weird that there were less 1oz than 1/2 oz coins minted when historically the 1/2 are the lower mintage.

THANKS ericj96 for all your helpful info image

I loaded up on the Platinum but what about the "W" Gold fractionals? I bought alot of them as well. Anyone know final mintages on these coins?

    Thanks, GrandAm image
    GrandAm :)
  • Anyone get the latest copy of Numismatic News? What did they have posted this week on the numbers? TIA
  • What could cause these numbers to increase? Does the mint have the option of minting more or is it fixed by law?

  • << <i>It seems weird that there were less 1oz than 1/2 oz coins minted when historically the 1/2 are the lower mintage. >>

Probably due to the big price tag + selling at Christmas time + too many other US Mint products available.

    Merry Christmas to all...
