I'm currently soaking an 1811 Large cent in oil for over a month now to remove green colored residue (PVC?) and it is working nicely. Very time consuming process however.

Once or twice per week I replace the oil with fresh oil and gently roll a q-tip over the coin to remove excess green goo.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

It does dissolve PVC and other oxidants but is itself an oxidant as olive oil is mildly acidic. This can "bleach" the surface to a pinkish color in some instances, which may require a toning.

Why not use acetone? It seems acetone would be incredibly quicker and less risk to the coin.

On the brown ones, it makes them look like the details are more bold while their is some oil on it. If you dont get 100% of the oil off of the coin, the coin spots up after a couple of years. Bottom line, olive oil is not a good thing for problem free copper.
