Went to the local, once a month show yesterday. It is a small show-about 20 tables. I found this coin in a dealers case. He even gave me a discount on the price.
Here is the coin and the holder. Anybody know what I found?

<< <i>What give it away that it's a proof? >>
Several things -- the matte finish, the exceptional details and the wide, squared-off rims primarily.

<< <i>The question is: Was it a cherry pick or clerical error on the part of the dealer. >>
The dealer probably didn't even slow down or think to check. This happens more than you would imagine - I once cherrypicked a proof 1938 Jefferson marked as mint state for $3.
Oh, yeah, the OP definitely sucks.

The dealer had a second look when he discounted the price even further. It's not a clerical error.

And for the record: YOU SUCK!
This is by far my best find. Imagine if it had a VDB on the reverse.
The dealer had no idea that it was a matte proof. If fact he knows I collect MPLs and he never even gave it a second look.
I often ask dealers if they have any MPLs. 99% of the time they say "NO", followed by "Those coins are very rare and I can't even tell the difference." I like those dealers.

Looking at auction records I'd say about $400-500 conservatively, assuming this slabs in the 64BN-65BN range, and possibly more.
