Grades poppped... a beat down, but with a happy ending *** (with scans)

Ever get that feeling when you're excited and disappointed at the same time? Kinda like two opposites striving for dominance. That's what I got when I checked out my subs.

When I saw grades scroll down the page, my heat started jumping, and I decided to close the window, get some water, and come back. I shrinked my browser window so I'd see 1 grade at a time as I scrolled down. The +/- is how off I was on my estimation.

by the time I scrolled to 26, my heart had sunk. I was 13 for 25 so far with my pre-grades, with 7 lower and 4 higher. Then line 26. Very, very nice. I picked the 71 Mays up as a ex/mt, but figured it had a great shot at a NM. Ended up getting 1 higher. Sweet. That pretty much pays for the sub right there if I decided to flip it.

The miscut sucks. Sweet looking card, just a touch wide. Well, at least it didn't come back as "trimmed."

Digi - why so many 6's? Corner wear? Centering?

Good question. I wrote on the submission form "No qualifiers if the next lowest grade would suffice." I basically didn't want a card with 9 everything and 8 centering to get graded a PSA 9 oc. I'd rather have the 8. However, if the card is 9 everything, 5 centering, I'll take the 9 oc. Anyways, I think they just figured "No Qualifiers" and left it at that. Lets take a look...

    1 1954 TOPPS 180 WES WESTRUM N/A 6 (-1)
This one really surprised me. I figured it for a high-end 7 or low-end 8. Centering was, at worse, 33/67, which is within 8 guidelines. Edges were sweet, but there was a touch of corner wear that didn't look worse than a solid 7. I don't know what I missed.

    5 1960 TOPPS 450 ORLANDO CEPEDA N/A 6 (-1)
Great looking card. It was rather oc, 29/71 at the worse spot, but it was t/b centering (if you turned the card on it's side). That's within 7 guidelines. Three corners were very lightly touched. I have worse looking 7s.

    8 1961 TOPPS 150 WILLIE MAYS N/A 6
Expected. Corner wear. I just wanted it slabbed.

    11 1962 TOPPS 300 WILLIE MAYS N/A 5
Horrible centering l/r centering (just a bit better than 80/20), but beautiful corners and edges. A bit of print snow though in an otherwise dark and colorful surface.

    12 1963 TOPPS 169 1963 ROOKIE STARS N/A 6 (-1)
    60/40 centering. 3 lightly touched corners. I figured it'd be a solid 7.

    13 1963 TOPPS 520 ORLANDO CEPEDA N/A 6 (-1)
I figured the centering (65/35) and 4 lightly touched corners would drop it into the 7 range.

    14 1964 TOPPS 468 GAYLORD PERRY N/A 6 (-1)
Centering was 68/32, with 3 lightly touched corners and one corner suffering a little more fraying. I guess I should have figured a 6 on this one.

    17 1965 TOPPS 360 ORLANDO CEPEDA N/A 6 (-1)
Centering was 27/73, with 3 lightly touched corners. This one was borderline, but I figured it was weighted more on the 7 side.

    20 1967 TOPPS 480 WILLIE McCOVEY N/A 6
Expected. Centering was 23/77 with two lightly touched corners. If I resubmitted it, it'd have come back a PSA 8 oc. Woth the same on the registry, but I think "PSA 8 oc" better describes the card than "psa 6."

I was a little surprised. Looking through my collection, I figured I had a pretty good idea of what a PSA 6 and a PSA 7 looked like.

    Cards are back... some scans...

1961 Topps Willie McCovey PSA 7
1965 Topps Willie McCovey PSA 8
1970 Topps Willie McCovey PSA 8
1971 Topps Willie Mays PSA 8

1961 Topps Orlando Cepeda PSA 7
1966 Topps Orlando Cepeda PSA 8

And some of the stuff I thought could pull 7s.

1960 Topps Orlando Cepeda PSA 6
1963 Topps Orlando Cepeda PSA 6
1965 Topps Orlando Cepeda PSA 6

1963 Topps Rookie Stars (Gaylord Perry) PSA 6
1964 Topps Gaylord Perry PSA 6

1962 Topps Willie Mays PSA 5
I'm guessing that the way PSA treats the "snow" on cards is -1 grade from it's maximum grade w/o the snow. Centering is within the PSA 6 range, but with the snow, I guess they knocked it down. Oh well. Considering that I paid $10 (ten) for the card, I think I did pretty good. image

Sorry to play devil's advocate, but I think that 66 Cepeda could have received a PD. There is some type of smudge, from printing wheels (??), on the left side of the card near the border and the picture that runs from top to bottom.

The centering on the 62 Mays is really within PSA6 guidelines. Its nearly 95/5 L/R

Yup, I was wondering about that too. With "no qualifiers" requested, I figured it'd get a 7 at best, 6 at worse. The 8 was a surprise. But, I guess they were considering it a "minor" printing imperfection. I've got a 1967 Topps Gaylord Perry PSA 8 with a similar print line going down one of the outer borders. Oh well. I'm happy with it, and it lives a happy life in my registry collection. image

Actually, this is what 80/20 looks like. It was directly on the edge, but fell off the 5 end instead of the 6.

Oh, did not realize you asked for NQ. Looks like PSA did a good job on their grades.
