Whoever thinks the market is is weakening . . .
. . . hasn't been watching the results of US coins in the auctions held the last couple of days in Denmark and Switzerland.

What are some recent US auction prices for a complete PAN PAC set, with both $50 pieces?

<< <i>Market has been weakening for last few months - only bright spot is bullion. JMV show for Houston last weekend cancelled at last minute. >>
Really? There are plenty of areas where the market continues to get hotter and hotter -- of course, that's primarily for original coins with great eye appeal. They continue to go onward and upward and the run-of-the-mill, average-for-the-grade stuff is softening in most areas.

What was the highlight of both of these shows for you?
<< <i>I just came back from attending both sales. What a bloodbath. BTW, the Pan Pac set brought more like US $240K. It was no bargain. >>
Can you be more specific why it was a bloodbath?

Before the auctions took place, my answer would have been the run of Massachusetts silver. Even though many had been lightly cleaned, it was still a very nice group of coins. Now that the sales are over and no bargains were had, I'd say the highlight of the trip was trouncing the British dealers at darts after the auction.

You could sell an NE shilling in a hut in Lower Slombovia and it would still bring a market level, or even more. And Andy would be there.
The Danish catalogue had some WONDERFUL non-US stuff too. Medieval Portuguese coins, anyone?

robertpr - next time you go to buy some really nice coins, be sure to bring your graph and explain to the sellers that prices are declining.
1797 Dollar VF-XF - $4144
1798 Dollar VF+ - $2486
2- 1907 Saint High Relief - $8288 1 was cleaned
1925D Saint - $2486

<< <i>Well I can't read the swiss site, but the prices listed are really low. I just don't know if those were closing prices, opening prices or suggested selling prices. 1 swiss CHF = .8288 USD or so, which means the prices for some $20 saints are $656? It would be worth the trip. Wow, find another one of these and I'm there !!!! Any financial backers, I'll go buy everything they have to bring back. Should be a good ROI, I've got $75k to put in.

Read the graph again. Only the 6 month MA is still declining. The index rose in value from October to November.

I will pay full quote on everything american they have to offer, and make a ton reselling it. It might be worth checking out the foreign auction markets. Hmmmmmm

Attending a coin auction... just another day at the office...
troucing the British dealers at darts... priceless...

ATTENTION: due to custom-problems this coin will NOT be shipped to the USA !!!

I think you're missing the point. Most everything sold for substantially more than the estimates.
With realistic estimates, half the bidders would have stayed home. And don't think the catalogers don't know it.

That, plus afterward they wouldn't be able to brag about how far over estimate their sales lots sold for.
It looks like I was the underbidder for lot 1617, this 1794 half cent that I thought looked pretty sweet:
Based on the pics and my interpretation of the Heritage prices realized, I pegged this at $8K+. My bid was intended to be enough over the estimate so that I would win if nobody was paying attention, but enough below what I thought it was worth so that I wouldn't be a serious competitor against someone who knew what they were doing.
Being the underbidder is the worst possible thing from my perspective. It either means that I was totally wrong about the value and that I lucked out that some other idiot outbid me, or that I really would have had the rip if that one bidder missed the auction.
Given your background, CCU, I assume you made a point at looking at this lot? Could you comment on it? Or maybe Andy if not you?
I'm always trying to learn!
jonathan
thanks!
