Why would you want a PCGS certified reverse proof silver eagle over a raw one?

...PCGS slabbed silver eagles have TERRIBLE spotting problems. Why would you want a coin that has good odds of going bad?

-David

Edited to add... it's ONLY the silver eagles that seem to have this problem.

I'm keeping mine raw. I like the look in the original mint holders.

My set is staying like my silver eagle collection, raw in original packaging.....

One of these days I will go back and get the older proofs (86-00)

It's not that I want one and actually, I don't have one.
I would like a reverse proof Gold eagle, though. Raw or slabbed image

Sounds like you have a mistaken perception that putting an ASE in a PCGS slab increases it's chances of spotting. --Jerry

I've never had a raw one get them. Every PCGS one I've ever had developed them.

Like I said.... I'd rather have the GOLD reverse proof. I do have a question David... The thread title asks why I would want a PCGS certified reverse proof silver eagle and you say : Every PCGS you have EVER HAD has developed them ? Just how many have you had certified that spotted. Didn't they just get released this year ?

Mine are all PCGS slabbed. I suppose that we should revisit this

thread in one year and see, what is what.

My reference on this was to silver eagles in general, not to the reverse proof. I've owned a fair share of silver eagles both slabbed and raw, but no reverse proofs.

  • I don't think it's a slabbed vs. raw problem as much as it's a mix of a 'luck of the draw' and general storage problem. All my raw eagles remain spot free. But, that's not to say there aren't any spotted eagles out there that haven't seen PCGS plastic.

I thought that the problem of spotting, was more with MS Silver Eagles

    then PR Silver Eagles

No matter what anybody tells you, the answer is simple, M-O-N-E-Y........period. There is no other reason why people would take newly minted coins in very attractive mint packaging and send the box unopened to a grading service and spend nearly as much as they paid for the coins themselves to have them graded by a 3rd party.

And that answer also holds true for most every coin that has ever been graded, dipped, regraded, doctored up, crossed over, reviewed, regraded, maxxed out, etc. The simple fact is the market for whatever reason has both accepted and views coins in 3rd party corporate plastic as more valuable and desirable then comparable raw coins, even if in essentially identical condition (grade). In fact, this has become such an accepted practice throughout the hobby and industry itself, that if you offer a nice coin without being in some supposedly respected 3rd party plastic holder, the potential buyer will more than likely immediatly view the coin with a suspicious eye wondering what exactly is wrong with it and wehy it hasn't been graded.

Protection. Some people like to keep them with the certificate of authenticity in the original box. Some like to build registry sets. Some like to have the "added value" for resell and some just want to have them piled up in a drawer with other boxes of mint products to have and to hoard. There are many reasons. I prefer the protection. That is why my registry sets are named PLASTIC HOUSING DEPT : )

None of my sets are complete, but a few coins that I have in the safe house are there for protection. SAE's are not part of my household. Reverse Proofs may soon be.

If the issue is milk spots, they can appear on proofs as well. I received a group of 5 in '01 from the mint. One now has a couple spots in the field. I'm thinking of using it as a pocket piece, or just giving it to my 6 year old.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

I agree with you. Sounds like the OP has a storage problem. --jerry

I don't have anything against PCGS slabbed ASE (unless they're First Strike image ) but I really like the mint packaging so if I had a choice I would take the mint packages set over a graded set any day.

I missed ordering the set by about a week image because I spent my money elsewhere. I haven't decided yet if I'm willing to pay double yet but if someone wanted to sell a set to a collector for a reasonable price I'd do it.
