LINK to auction of CSI slab

Coin is graded MS67, but with that weak strike, it's no better than a 64 IMO.

  • I am amazed how many new "grading companies" have popped up on eBay in the past 2-3 months. We can probably blame eBay for their proliferation....

I wonder how many of these are purchased by non-collectors as holiday presents for collectors? If this is the case, many collectors will be disappointed soon!
  • Depends on exactly what you consider new. Is it recent, yes. Has it never been seen before, No. How recent is it? Well I have two of them sitting in front of me that I purchased on eBay a month and a half ago. But the one you linked is a new variety. In fact after looking through his other auctions he has three new varieties. None of the ones he has match the two that I have. (One of mine is a Novelty slab though and not a production slab.)

At least CSI is somewhat more of a straight shooter. They list their website address on the back of their insert and they explain their approach to grading right on their homepage:

<< <i>CSI Grading grades and authenticates US coins and some foreign coins according to our own standards. We DO NOT use the Sheldon Scale to grade coins. We grade coins to eye appeal and we are not concerned with normal scratches and dings that are in most coins. In addition, we do not lower the grade on coins that are properly cleaned. If you purchase one of our coins or use our grading service you agree to these standards. The coins we grade are intended more for the fun factor of collecting and not towards the investment quality coins. >>

    Their homepage also says:

<< <i>You can certify your own coins and we provide you with professionally designed certification holders to complete your task. >>

Their slabs are an interesting alternative to the Coin World ones and I wouldn't mind getting a couple without coins inside. However, I prefer the clear inner ring and that seems to be the exception now.

Those grading standards sound like an old song we used to hear. Dare I say ___!
  • I don't believe it. I didn't recognize this guy until looked at his website. This guy first showed up close to a year ago, but he wasn't slabbing coins at that time. He was the source of NGC lookalike slabs. Especially the multi-coin slabs.
