Need some help- Toning with matches

a dealer i know is starting to expiriment toming coins using crushed up match heads. he's doing it with junk coins for now, but he is talking about moving up to more expensive coins. i need more information about it so i can convince him it is extremely frowned upon by the numismatic community before he does any real damage. i plan on showing him this post and its responses so please help me convince him. thank you in advance for your reponses.

First, name the dealer so I'll know who to avoid.

I agree... out him. That, and get a picture or two. Let's see if we can all point out why they're AT.

i'm not going to out him. he's just been expirimenting with 64 roosies and quarters. and he hasn't been selling them. alls i'm looking for is some information to convince him not to do it with good coins. AT'ing coins is bad, it ruins their numismatic value, etc. thanks

Artificially toning coins is not numismatically responsible and will ulitimately end up as a huge detriment to the hobby. Future Numismatists will be hard-pressed to locate original coins that have all of their history still associated with them.

Coin Doctoring is very, very wrong and harms the hobby as a whole.

As a dealer you would think he knows that. But that assumes common sense is something everyone has.

Paul, they all start this way with the "I wonder what would happen ifs" and the "I'll just try in on junk coins" until they start producing some nice looking stuff and then dumping it on the market. Out him!

i'll tell him how the numismatic community feels about it, and if he does it after that, then i will out him. i really don't think he knows what he's doing is bad, very bad. like i said, if he does it after i tell him, i'll out him.

toning with matches starts an accelerated toning that is actually a corosion process that is hard to stop after removal of matches. Even though coins may look nice soon after match removal, they can easily be ugly black in a couple years, so black that dipping will ruin value of uncirculated coin. It would be foolish for dealers to sell coins like this unless they wanted to lose customers or if they just wanted to throw money away. On melt coins and just to have fun, it is a;right but with numismatic items worth more than$100, it would be business suicide, as well as they would be poor examples of numismatic curatirs for future coin owners.

    Find the ManofCoins threads.
If the reactions there, and the "reasoning" behind it don't make him stop, then it is all about potential money for him.

Though....if you show him the threads, he may move on to trying to tone coins in OGHs......

Does he plan on submitting his results to top tier TPGs for slabbing? I've heard some top TPGs slab AT coins. If so, could this be seen as a stamp of approval from the industry?

  • Tell him it's unethical and not only will it harm the hobby, it will harm his business because he WILL be found out eventually.

Tell your dealer friend that if word gets out that he's doing this, and it will get out, he can kiss his reputation goodbye and anybody with any amount of money will spend it elsewhere.

like i said before, he stopped doing it. he was just expirimenting, but we stopped him before he did any real damage. thanks to everyone with the information!

Would you consider it "accelerated" toning if you lit the said matches?
